The first Harpy was a elf woman who achieved her dream of flight through a deal with a demon. The twisted creature, from that day on known as Harpia, had her arms transformed into mighty wings and her feet into sharp clawed bird feet. She also gained a second, way weaker set of arms, to not have to suffer the fate of having to use her legs for everything. Her children have since come a long way.
To start with, harpies have developed a culture of martial raidership and matriarchal dominance. They are highly territorial, with most territories being situated around mountains. Landwalkers who enter and/or reside in their territory are at risk of getting swooped from above, where the harpies will often take food, valuables and sometimes even people. That is unless you are willing to give your stuff over willingly, and some people have managed to get harpy packs to even protect them if the the need should arise in exchange for regular stuff.
Male harpies are rare, quite strong and especially valuable to the pack. Those who are around are usually hidden away until a serious threat arises. Some males actually reject this practice, rather choosing to abandon the pack to forge a destiny of their own. The “Eye of the Great Desert” is such one example, stalking the skies over said desert like any bird of prey would.
Reproduction is a interesting subject in the case of harpies, the interesting part being how straight forward it is. As a mostly female race, harpy females are pretty much compatible with every other species around, with only few exceptions, the most prominent being Dragons. 1 month after the act, a harpy then lays a singular egg, which then needs about 6 months of sitting in the heat of the nest before a new harpy hatches.
