Mages & Wizards

Adeptus—Also called ceremonialists, astromancers, ritual mages, hermeticists, magisters, and doctors of natural philosophy, these practice high magic, which is a mix of hermeticism, astrology, Kaballah, gematria, numerology, magic squares and talismans, archae emanations, and planetary magic. An apprentice adeptus is called a famulous, and a senior adept is called an arch-adept. Some consider adeptus to be occult scientists, and label their magic as experimenta. Educated mages usually fall into this class.   Alchemist—Also called furniers, this is a mage who practices alchemy, aka hermetic magic. Apprentice alchemists are called lungs or neophytes, and most alchemists are monks or nobles. Pursuing alchemy requires education and finances. Most advances in material sciences and processes come from alchemists.   Arpathians—An aggressive mystery school founded in Thendaros, but now extinct as class.   Bard—This is a type of druid, a pagan poet who practices bardry. Modern bards have converted to the Faith to preserve their unwritten wisdom.   Blade Mage—From Burlam or Alusia, these are combination wizards and weaponers who specialize in making magical weapons. Ghost smiths are an offshoot of this group.   Cunning Man—These are called folk magicians, hedge wizards, or gray mages if male; or henwifes, wise women, or crones if female. They practice low or gray magic, specializing in healing. These are not witches, and they freely offer services to their villages. There is still an element of shamanism in their craft.   Druid—Pagan wizards of old who are now extinct in Aorlis. They employed a combination of weather magic and astronomy and served as judges for their communities. Bardry is a surviving offshoot of druidry. Ellidic Mage—A specialized adeptus who practices angel magic, often in the angels’ Ellidic language. This is class is focused more on sacred geometry and scrying.   Enchanter/Enchantress—Wizards who practice glamour, aka faerie magic. This is limited to faeries and those humans with faerie ancestors.   Freemason—These are wizards who practice sacred geometry and oversee large construction projects such as cathedrals, castles, and large bridges. They are a multinational brotherhood, but not as cohesive as our modern idea of spiritual masonry. Not all masons are wizards.   Ghost Masks—Mage-assassins from Eldris who can disguise themselves and make murder look more like suicide.   Ghost Smith—A blade mage from Hexton who infuses trapped ghosts and spirits into weaponsmithing.   Gruagach—A powerful, top level faerie enchanter/enchantress.   Illusionist—Also called a legerdemainist, prestidigitator, or stage magician, these actually are not mage or spell users, but tricksters and entertainers who performs sleight of hand. They are included here to reinforce their distinction.   Kabalist—This is a comprehensive system at the crossroads of theology, math magic, and other disciplines. The wizards excel at creating golems and animating objects.   Karcist—Also called alienists or the sorcerers in black, these wizards developed in Alusia and practice a gruesome form of chthonic magic. Sometimes they venture into Eldris as well.
  Karlionne Piper—An enchanter subclass open to humans, as well as faeries. They charm animals and people with their flute playing.   Kui-Kourri—A mythological Kui-Kor shaman, long extinct on Aarthus.   Maille Mage—These are an offshoot group from blade smiths. They are wizard-armorers who specialize in making magic maille, especially Gwyfnedi Sigil Mail.   Monarch—Royal-blooded monarchs sometimes have healing powers. Some royals have exceptional curative magic, but some do not possess this inborn power.   Mystic—Also called a prophet, this is a religious visionary who communes directly with God and thus benefits from holy visions and spiritual gifts.   Necromancer—Also called demonologists, diabolists, or nigromancers, this class covers valderie or goety, which is summoning or talking with the dead or demons. Many are undercover monks or clerics, and occasionally some learn this craft to help battle demons and undead.   Nycomancer—A worker of magic poisons, which includes poison touch.   Occult Archivist—This is a librarian wizard who collects and catalogues magical, ancient, or occult works. These are found in Gwyfned University.   Occult Artificer—A wizard-artificer from Allyn who builds clockworks and automatons, but also may makes these items sentient. The ubiquitous bronze head is one such device.   Oinomancers—Aka dream weavers, this is a sleep mage who interacts through dreams, both his own and those of other people.   Orloisian Rune Tattooist—A Jotun tattoo artist who creates enchanted tattoos, each with their own purpose or power. This is a subclass of seidr magic, but open to both men and women.   Physician—Also known as doctors of medicine, he practices humoral magic or humorism, and he wears a lavender robe and cap. This is an offshoot of adeptus. Surgeons and other health-care professionals are not included in this.   Priest—These are religious channelers of the Divine, an intermediary between man and God. Despite similarities to adeptus, they do not consider their beliefs to be “magic,” but divine will.   Sciomancer—These are shadow workers who animate, command, and travel by shadows. These mages are best known in Eldris.   Shaman—A tribal combination mage and priest. In Aorlis, they are found in Draas only.   Shtrigamancer—A vampire sorcerer. These undead have an entire catalogue of vampire specific magic. This is a necromancy subclass.   Sin Eater—A type of cunning man or henwife who eats and embodies the sins of the recently deceased, allowing departed soul to access Heaven quicker.   Tempestarri—Eldrisian weather wizards, often fake, who summon or banish weather for a living.   Theurgist—Also known as thaumaturgists or prophets, this is a type of religious wonder worker and related to mystics.   Volva—Meaning “wand wed,” this is a Jotun woman witch who practices a magic called seidr. They are found only in Orlois.   Wind Whistler—This class is an offshoot of cunning men, and they control and collect winds by whistling. They are found in upper Blackvale along the coast.   Witch—Not a wise woman or henwife, but a folk magic expert in curses and weather magic. They usually gain their powers from demonic compacts. Witchcraft in Aorlis is centered on lower Eldris, but not limited thereto.
