Divine Hierarchy IV--Noirites to Watchers

Noirites/Dark Prateans

Noirites are a hybrid of the Elioud and Pratean races. They are beautiful, have extended lifespans, command great magik, and have wicked dispositions. Civis Noir was their home, and they are functionally extinct, only living on as a handful of vampire elders such as Ghol and Talespinner. They worshiped demons and lived a perverse, aberrant lifestyle. Noirites were short compared to their parent lineages, bing only about 7’ tall.

Elioud

Human/Nephilim offspring are the Elioud, and they appear more human than the Nephilim. They still have extra-digitation (six fingers and toes per hand or foot), and they are wicked by nature, about 6 to 8’ tall, without the Nephilim double row of teeth, and well-formed. Their abilities are exceptional, but not as great as the Nephilim. They have great magik aptitude, but they went extinct during the Great Deluge.

Nephilim/Gibborim

These are the infamous hybrids fathered by fallen angels (Watchers) on human mothers. Usually about 9’ to 16’ tall, with extra-digitation and double rows of teeth. They are physically mighty, super intelligent, with powerful magik and mental powers. They are physical and manifest, yet they know much angelic lore. Nephilim that marry mortals produce Elioud. They went extinct during the Great Deluge. Most monsters are Nephilim descendants, and when they die, their souls usually were reborn as demons in hell.

Old Races

Little is known about the Old Races. The Ealden are forgotten, but some record of the Telfarri still exists.

Ealden

Telfarri

These mysterious creatures from deep antiquity were the first and oldest sentient biological creatures on the planet. No one knows if they are Aarthus natives, or if they swam here from across space time. Telfarri are functionally immortal, being as old as the planet itself (if not older), and aging on the same geological scale as Aarthus itself. They lair in deep, toxic, subterranean vaults and underground seas or lakes. Telfarri bodies and conformation are reminiscent of fat salamanders or iguanas, but they are about 80 to 120 feet long, snout to tail. Their long and paddle-like tails are ideal for swimming. They differ from the lizard template in that they have bulbous, lidless, multifaceted, fly-like eyes. Another delineating factor is their long, prehensile tongues that act frog-like, darting out to snare food at up to triple the telfarri’s body length. They are semiaquatic, so telfarri hides are pliable membranes, designed to retain moisture. They use their skin to breathe, and are adapted to life in air, fresh water, or salt water. For coloration, they are often multi-hued, with big stretches of unearthly violet, and colors the human eye cannot perceive, lending them a shimmering distortion. These ancient creatures have stubby, five-digit ‘fingers,’ clawless and webbed. They are not good for grasping or fighting, but good for swimming and digging. Telfarri are superhumanly intelligent and have almost unlimited telekinetic power. They have no voice box, and speak no known language, but they are powerful telepaths and adept at making their will known. Communication is not really on the table for them, because no one knows if these creatures perceive humanity as sentient race. The alien forces often mutate and deform beings that live within a short range of a telfarri lair they radiate. This effect has created the Warped, or Chaos Beasts, each covered elsewhere. The telfarri’s combat abilities are not really important, for none but a god could battle one with any hope of success. Not even the great heroes of Aorlis, all alive, organized, and prepared, could hope to take down a telfarri on his worst day. There are five, and they spend their time sleeping and dreaming unfathomably dark and alien dreams. Gender does not apply to telfarri, for they all lay eggs. Those eggs are deposited in water, and the young telfarri must fend for themselves. New telfarri are unlikely ever to be conceived, for the remaining examples of this race hate each other far too much to procreate.

Great Old Ones

The Great Old Ones are alien invaders hailing from unfathomable realities from far across the dimensional gulf of space. Nightmarish beings, they are not fully formed, but phased, often with huge bat-like wings and near limitless power. They are not divine, but their power is godlike. If worshiped, they don’t care, and if summoned, they show no preference for adherents. The difference between long slumber and death is minimal for these. If they manifest on Aarthus, they are usually gargantuan beyond all sense. They are not strictly three-dimensional, with edges and appendages that cannot be seen or bulge through rips in reality.

Demon

Demons are seen as the authors of all mankind’s woes and tempatations. They are spirits of the air, the upper atmosphere, and darkness. They widely are believed always to be evil, but this is untrue, because some (rare) demons are neutral or even good. These beings always are ravenous and nothing will sate them or offer them relief besides possessing a mortal’s body. They can also possess and animate statues and fetishes at will, and animals’ bodies. All demons are terrified by iron, which explains why necromancers are always armed with swords and other iron implements. Iron burns demon flesh, or the flesh of demonically possessed people as if the weapon were superheated. Demons are also terrified by loud, clanging noises, especially bells. The clamor of blessed church bells will damage demons. The base starting point for demons’ erratically wild features is: simian ape-like torsos; with goat-like legs and split hooves; a prehensile barbed or forked tail; long talons; ape- or goat-like heads; ram’s horns; forked tongues; goat's eyes; and functional bat wings. Their skin is scaly green and icy cold to the touch. Every demon appears different, and each is a mix of random features and grotesqueries. When armed, it is usually with a military fork, trident or scourge, although other weapon types are possible. When on Aarthus demons can manifest in their primary form or choose to remain unmanifest and incorporeal. They can launch attacks from either state and when incorporeal they can attempt to enter humans or animals and potentially posses them. When demons manifest on the mortal plane they often bring a powerful aroma of sulpher and may leave water or slime in their tracks. Their presence may also cause nearby walls and surfaces to emit slime. Demons speak all human languages, but they prefer Classical Karmithian. The native language of Hell is Nhetherspeak. Demons usually come to Aarthus when summoned by a necromancer. Many necromancers study demonology for noble reasons, but long-term association with evil demons slowly corrupt’s the mage’s soul. Once on Aarthus, most demons do not wish to return to Hell, and will resist attempts at sending them back.

Unnamed Demons

Imp

Imps are configured much the same as demons, but about 6” tall with stick thin limbs and hooked noses or beaks. Many are pitch black and appear as negative space. Like full-sized demons, imps can manifest, or stay unmanifest and invisible, with only their eyes and fangs visible, but they can attack in both states. Imps have limited shape-changing ability, and low-level human intelligence, and this allows a few imps to become familiars. They fly in swarms, and chitter like angry monkeys. They cannot speak and do not have individual names. Greater demons assign all the menial work in hell to imps.

Familiar

A familiar is an imp posing as a wizard or witch’s animal assistant. Once the familiar assumes their animal form, they keep it for the life of their intended wizard/witch. The form typically will be a toad, turtle, ferret, rat, cat, owl, raven, louse, flea, bat, bedbug, cockroach, beetle, or a similar “low” creature. Witch familiars suckle blood from their spell caster’s “witch’s mark.” These demons can converse with their spell-caster and will spy for them. When the spell-caster dies, the familiar grabs their “master’s” soul and at once hauls it off to hell.

Shadow People

These are low level demonic, human-shaped shadows that haunt spoiled locations. “Spoiled,” in this context, are those places where horrific events took place, or graveyards, battlefields, and similar, negatively haunted locations. The shadow people can speak in a hissing manner, but they do so rarely. They often work in groups, but many work alone. These are not ghosts, because they were never human and were born to shadow.

Succubus (Female)/Incubus (Male)

These spirits are born of the benighted sky, and are parasitic breeding demons. Succubus breed with men, and drinks their life energy, while incubus partakes of women. This demon assumes the form most pleasing to its victim, but can only be seen by its chosen lover, because to other witnesses it looks like a skiff of brackish smoke. Demon/human offspring raised on Aarthus become cambions, while those raised in hell become demons. Succubus and incubus can assume corporeal human form, but they can also grow bat wings and fly. This is not the only variety of demon that can interbreed with humans, but they are most specialized in it.

    Fallen Angels

Also called the Egregor, Watchers, Archdemons, or Archons, these fallen angels were cast down after the Wars in Heaven. Others angels fell for taking human women as wives and fathering the Nephilim race. That makes Watchers the fathers of demons, in that Nephilim ghosts became demons. The Watchers’ powers still are monumental, but are much degraded compared to the original angels’ strength. Some of them are imprisoned in cages deep below the earth, while others are Hell’s royalty. One subgroup of these are the Seven Deadly Sins, or the fallen that represent those vices. Another subgroup is the Four Kings, or cardinal fallen that each represent one of the four cardinal directions (East, etc.). The abbreviation NB which follows these beings indicateds they are non-binary, like the angels from which they are derived.
  • Azeydiel the Instigater (NB)—The King of the West, the deadly sin of Pride, and Rebellion. He claims to be king of the world or Aarthus, and one of the four cardinal kings.
