An alliance made up of hunters and poachers infiltrates and attacks the Plains of Rohesia. The guardians of the plains, the centaurs, try to fend them off but are overwhelmed by the sheer number. The conflict spans over multiple weeks with the hunters gaining more and more ground. Over time, a negative presence accumulated in the plains that at one point during the conflict suddenly vanished. After it vanished, the hunters and poachers started to suffocate in their sleep. The centaurs used the diminished numbers to turn around the tides and win the war. After their victory, the centaurs investigated the bodies and found them to have indeed been suffocated to death with scratch marks at their necks and a dent in their chest. They burnt the bodies in case it was a disease. Finally wanting to properly bury their dead, the centaurs went to investigate the remains of their fallen, only to find the remains of the horse halves of their comrades. Their human halves were all missing. An elder of the centaurs explained why this had happened. Mares, beings born from intense suffering and injustice, had been brought forth from this conflict. They used to be the stuff of legends handed down from the very first centaurs, but they were now confirmed to truly exist.
