Vald

Vald is one of the six Giant Automaths responsible for Awakening the Giants on The Cradle on the First Day. Vald represents the war-like Frost Giants, and is third from the bottom of The Ordning, the caste system of Giant-kind.
Vald served a key function on the First Day: instilling in the newly Awakened Giants the lesson that might trumps all else in survival and life itself, and that death is a primary tool of Giants. After the Giants were fully Awakened and came to their senses, Vald challenged the largest and strongest of each clan of Giants to single combat in turn, fighting to the death, using what weapons could be found around them. When he fought the champion of the Frost Giants, Vald was nearly felled when the log he was using as a club snapped in two, yet he was the champion, still.
For his next fight, Vald knew he would need a better weapon than what he could scrounge from Yorth's shores, so he turned to Isinn for aid, who forged for him Dauðafæri, the Bringer of Death, a huge greatsword. With sword in hand, Vald defeated the champions of Fire, Cloud, and Storm Giants in turn. The rest of the Giants looked on and saw the grim reality of death, come to the defeated. They saw also the value in craftsmanship of fine weapons, which Vald needed to overcome greater challenges. And finally, they saw Vald's prowess in combat and bulging muscles, and with that power he was able to defeat even greater foes. Yet, after defeating the Storm Giant champion, his freshly slain body at Vald's feet, Isinn, who had been watching the combats with cold calculation, challenged Vald to single combat. His unchecked fury was no match for her cunning and martial skill, and with her axe, Drekakló, was able to turn away Vald's savage blows until he knelt exhausted and defeated at her feet. This taught the giants that even the Giant Automaths are subject to their own Ordning, gods though they may be.
Vald is depicted as a blue-skinned, white-bearded Frost Giant in leathers and furs, wielding Dauðafæri, drenched in blood, resting on his shoulder, the severed head of a white Dragon, held by the jaws limply from his left hand. Giants of all castes of The Ordning recognize and respect the fearsome Vald.
Priests and clerics of Vald practice the domains of War and Death.
