Brochs of Far Pell, the skirted towers- While the Orcs of Far Pell are most known for their nomadic ways, sledding and pack wolves, and harpoon fishing kayaks. In remote wintering grounds the orc clans meet at black rock towers across the polar circle. Each is made of dry laid black flagstone. They are roughly 80 meters in diameter and stand 20 meters high. They are round towers as best to resist the high winds of the open tundra and are enclosed by a low wall about 2 meters tall. These walls stand roughly 12 meters out from the central tower and have lines and anchor points for tent hides that, when in use flair out from the second floor of the tower and form a steep drop off to the low wall that repels winds and snow; this earns them another moniker of “skirted towers”. This external space is used for storage for the traveling kit and wolves of the more nomadic clans. The most prestigious clans keep these towers and collect tribute from their wandering kin. In exchange, the nomads have secure wintering grounds to endure the long dark and cold winter. Each tower contains as many five to six floors with each serving a different purpose, the main floor is a feasting hall and hearth with the next floor being a sleeping area to capture the rising heat and warmth, the third and fourth floors act as storage spaces for food wares, whale oil, blubber, the top floor is a watch tower in the summer months and a sacred space under the sky curtain (aurora). It is also believed that beneath these towers are caverns also used for sacred purposes and rituals, or as a redoubt should the tower ever be assaulted. The name of these towers could be derived from the stones of which they are made with Broch pronounced “Brock” being a combination of black and rock, or named for some forgotten clan or ancestor who began building these immense and remote towers. Few outside the Orcish clans have even seen these fortresses, but they are vital to the orc’s way of life.
