As Talia flees at the powerful suggestion of the lich, Herman also makes a play to escape, deceiving the others into thinking he has gone to get help, while the the lich creates a wall of flame to further harass his attackers. As Herman flies away, Vercingetorix, Garrus, and Gwenda rally, ultimately destroying the forms of the lich and his ghostly servants. Before the lich sacrifices himself with a final fireball, hoping to sow as much pain and chaos as possible, he gleefully warns the party that the assault will continue. His words prove true when after once again assuming defensive positions, the Gatekeepers hear cries for help coming from the graveyard. Verciingetorix observes what appears to be a woman, buried up to her neck in the graveyard dirt, however, this is a ruse, and it is actually a disembodied head of some powerful undead creature. As it rises into the air, Gwenda quickly casts blade barrier to separate it from the party, but with the flapping of powerful wings in the air, it soon becomes apparent that it is too late, as several vrock demons and their nalfashnee master enter the temple and engage the party in deadly combat. The vrock assault them with poisonous spores and electricity, while the massive and grotesque nalfashnee attempts to curse their magic items. The party takes a beating but continues to fight against impossible odds, determined to fulfill their mission to defend Gray Vengeance as they continue harnessing the power off the White Axiom.
