The Abyss of Darkness is the rift through which Darkness enters the multiverse. Currently, it is closed in the bubble of material existence created by The Builder. Keeping watch over the abyss is the duty of the
Aesir, guardians of the multiverse. Since the beginning Hod is the
Aes keeping watch over the abyss. When he started the watch Darkness tried to tempt him into releasing it. Hod tried to resist, but The Darkness was to strong. To make himself not see the images Darkness was showing Hod took his dagger and plucked out his eyes. Since then he has used his magical powers to "see" and sense the surroudings.
