Crown of the Spider Queen

Back when the Drow was a young race and new to cave life, they were even more divided than they are now. The different family clans were constantly at war with one another over the limited resources available to them within the 'Under Caves' in addition to the other native sentient folk.   One woman was able to develop new skills to thrive in the caves, and using this knowledge was able to unite all the clans, expand their territory and improve the lives of her fellow Drow. For her efforts she was given the title 'Drow Mother' and a crown was made to symbolize her position and power. The Crown was made of glittering silver that was crafted to resemble a freshly spun spider web, and six large emeralds are adored on the crown to resemble spider eyes. Giant Spiders had become an important creature in Drow society, so a crown based on them seemed fitting.   For many years she lead her people with the crown above her brow, and it became a symbol of unity among the Drow. When the Drow found a cave that lead back to the surface world, the 'Drow Mother' was the first to step out of that cave, ready to lead her people to the next stage of their lives. However things went terrible wrong. The cave opened up near the territory of a Goblin tribe that also kept giant spiders. The tribe had fallen on hard times, and weren't able to hunt enough prey to keep the spiders well feed, so the spiders had begun eating them instead. So when they came across the party of Drow with one wearing a crown resembling spider eyes and webbing they saw it as a gift from their gods. The Drow had not been expecting an attack, and were unprepared for the unprovoked ambush. Everyone from the party except for one soldier died in the attack. Though wounded he was able to escape, and could only helplessly watch as the goblins dragged the corpses away, and holding up the bloody crown as a trophy.   When the soldier made it back to the territory of the Drow no one believed his story, for how could their beloved queen and protectors be so easily slaughtered by small green men? The soldier was executed for treason and killing the 'Drow Mother', and the matriarchs of the other Drow families began to fight among themselves over who should be the new 'Drow Mother'. This bickering continues to this day, with assassination being a popular way of settling major disputes. many believe that the only way to reunite the Drow would be to find the Crown of the Spider Queen, for only those that wear he crown can unite them.
