Babylon Candles
How many miles to Babylon? Can I get there by candle-light? If your heels are nimble and your toes are light. Babylon candles are tallow tapers that are in high demand. A brand new taper lasts for 60 minutes of burn time, but it’s very rare to find a new, completely unused candle. Roll a d6 to determine how much time is left on a randomly found candle.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Effect: While a Babylon Candle burns, it allows the holder to travel at a rate of roughly 120 miles per hour, or 2 miles per minute. This benefit will not function inside of a vehicle and is good only for traveling by foot. The character may ignore obstacles and terrain as they are not traveling in normal space while this occurs. The character may take others with them if they can keep hold of the other person--usually by the hand or arm, but they must remain in contact.
Drawback: The character must make a Dexterity roll for every minute traveled in this manner to keep from losing their footing. If the candle is snuffed prior to the user stopping their walking, they can be lurched forward and may have to deal with the consequences of rolling down hills, hitting trees, rocks, streetlights, or other obstacles. Similarly, anyone who is being taken along with the candleholder and loses their hold upon them is considered to be in the same sudden-stop condition.
Because of the way they burn, the wicks of Babylon Candles tend to burn out before the wax is spent. An enterprising individual may repair the candle by digging the wick out with a Dex + Crafts roll, or replacing a spent wick with a magical wick. A hag’s taper leaf is ideal, a leaf from any hedgefruit, twisted paper from a magical or sacred writing: anything along these lines would function.
