Brightstone Burrows

Generations ago, when the founders of Murkow found gems deep in the rock beneath their town, they quickly employed a crew of dwarves to help make a mine. When the mine then went dry, some dwarves stayed behind, keeping the deed to the patch of land around the mine. Since then, generations of dwarves have lived among other races, but made their own imprint on the city growing around them. Literally.   The brightstone burrows is a city within a city. While the old mine now only serves as a fungal farm, the four blocks around it has been built up as a continous line of narrow houses. The courtyard between them is filled with pillars, supporting a new layer of houses around the whole district, before topping it all off to create a false mountain. The ground floor is filled with markets, storefronts, forges and workshops, while bridges between the pillars lets dwarves move between their houses in the upper apartments.   The old and new clans of the burrows have clawed their way to a sizable amount of renown in Murkow and her politics, both to protect their interests and to project their trade to the city and beyond. One of their main roles has been to butter up relations with dwarven peoples in the hills and mountains to the north and east of the city.
