Beross

Beross is home to an assortment of races who have been toughened by the planet's harsh conditions. Geothermal rivers encrusted with life remain the only habitable slivers of land across the entire planet. Scarce in resources and possessing little else, Beross does not see many visitors.

Overview

Few inhabited worlds are colder than Beross. Even Serpentis' antistellar face is kinder than the snow-swept wilds of Beross. The planet's thick atmosphere, maintained by constant volcanic activity, insulates it from its chilly place in the solar system. Consistent subzero temperatures and frequent blizzards lasting days at a time make Beross largely inhospitable. Geothermal springs and rivers offer the only oases and habitable areas in the frozen desert. Long stretches of lush vegetation, settlements, and what pass for cities border these waterways, many of which are neighbored by lava flows, scalding pools, and bubbling mud.   The landscape is devoid of much more than rolling hills made by oxi repulsion and occasional forests of stone pillars; many a volcano had long become dormant and been worn away by icy winds. With little to subvert air currents, blizzards sweep across the land unobstructed. Even amongst volcanic waters, Beross' inhabitants hunker down and hope for a hasty return to gentle snowflakes.

The Ones That Wander

Traveling beyond the geothermal hotspots is a death sentence, this only expedited should one find themselves up against an incoming storm. On the contrary, an animal resembling that of a giant, legged whale draped in fur wanders the frigid wastelands undeterred. Herds of them migrate far beyond the sanctuary of the heated oases. Upon their return, they shed their insulating layer of fur and use it as a nest for the calving season. This fur is prized by all, harvested responsibly, and among Beross' few exports.

Mirror World

It's well known—although maybe not accepted—by all that the Ancients manufactured the universe. According to Berossian legend, Beross was created by Xilodin, an Ancient locals believe to inhabit the largest volcano on the planet. It's said that he borrowed the likeness of his fellow Ancients' creations to make his own. Others believe it to be vice versa. Nonetheless, Beross' inhabitants share uncanny similarities to species across the universe: tysu and Ethiea's quilan, falsi and Serpentis' sefora, etc.
