Personal history
Sal was born in a village near Catancia, on the southern island. As a youth, he worked on his parents' farm, but he was the third child and had no hope of inheriting the place. His parents gave him some money and he moved to the city when he was sixteen.
Sal was a hard worker and a resourceful individual. He worked in the taverns and shops on the riverside and soon became the chef at a small alehouse. He introduced a new item to the menu, a fish pie his mother used to cook for him. The pie immediately became popular with the workers who frequented the alehouse and Sal became quite famous in his area.
He began dreaming of opening his own tavern and serving his pies to the world, so he began saving money. He soon realized he wouldn't be able to buy or rent a tavern with his meager pay and decided to take a shortcut. He borrowed money from some shady individuals and was able to buy his tavern when he was just twenty-five years old.
The people he borrowed money from didn't leave him alone, however, and his tavern soon became a front for their illicit activities. He wanted to become a tavern keep but became a money launderer instead. This arrangement lasted for more than a decade and Sal became more and more involved in the criminal organization he served until the operation was discovered by the town guard, who burned the tavern down attempting to arrest the criminals.
Sal escaped but was now a wanted man in Catancia. He took a ship to the Northern Island, dreaming of starting a new life and living his dream of being the proprietor of a tavern. He landed in Farport, but decided to travel somewhere else to set up shop. He was choosing between Oxpond and Baymore and finally decided on Baymore, so he began his journey through the Niveline mountains.
When he arrived in the village of Thanorum in the summer he was enamored by it, and especially the cheap but abandoned tavern in the center of the settlement. Sal repeated his old mistake, again borrowing money from the local criminality, this time from a Dwarf named Ulrik the Arm. He was soon in trouble with the Dwarf, who was preventing him from receiving the fish needed for his famous pies, but an unlikely group of adventurers managed to resolve his problem.
