Hammer of Thromneal

"In the days of yore when the dragons wore crowns
brave Thromneal magicked and smithed.
A weapon with the power to mountains bring down
he made but its reign was short-lived."
~the Saga of Thromneal

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Thromneal, considered the greatest Runesmith ever to live, weaved a multitude of powerful spells into the Hammer. Their exact effects are unknown and the legends and stories about the artifact are often contradictory in what it can actually do. The most common interpretation of the Legend of Thromneal states it was a weapon that could level mountains and destroy entire cities with ease. However, some believe it was a tool that Thromneal used to create even more powerful artifacts, or even merely a badge of office and that its magic is severely exaggerated. Whatever the case, its power as a symbol of Dwarven might likely overshadow whatever inherent magic the artifact actually possesses.

History

The Hammer has been lost for millenia, but legend says its location had been inscribed on an ancient tablet which had later been broken in two and interred in separate tombs. The halves have recently been recovered by a party of adventurers who hope to retrieve the Hammer.
It states: "That which was forged and once wielded, the Hammer of Thromneal the Ingenious, has been hidden. It has been hidden for the wickedness of its wielder, Hulrim, son of Thromneal, delver into depths best left undisturbed. It shall not be found, but by those intrusted with the location of these keys to its prison. The hammer will be found in the ancient halls of our fathers, in the city of Dhargorum and purity of purpose need be shown by those in search of it. There must be a True Dwarf among them, willing to step away when he would stand and be still when he would balk. So it will be."

Significance

The Hammer is extremely important to Dwarven culture in Ancaepya. Many depictions of it can be found in dwarven buildings all around the continent and reproductions of the hammer are sold in every major city with a large dwarven population. Many dwarves have set out into the ancient abandoned mineshafts of the Niveline mountains in search of it, most of whom never return.
Although the Hammer was long thought to have been lost in the Niveline mountains, new research theorizes its location might actually be the Golden Hills.
