Awakened Undead

Awakened Undead are an interesting race as they retain no memories of their past life with the exception of some past mannerisms and are usually a completely different person from their past life. They often seek integration in society as soon as they are freed from servitude, However, undeath is seen in a negative light by most people, often prompting hunts against them. Those that are reintegrated into society are often held as lower class, to get by, Awakened Undead typically enter the entertainment industry. In opposition to this, there are several heavily fortified cities around the world that were once controlled by liches and undead lords, when they are defeated, the Awakened Undead there will often rebuild and establish themselves as the new denizens of these so called Necropoli. Awakened Skeletons are the most common awakened undead and as such are the most looked down upon as their very presence is a gross reminder of death, this leads many Skeletons to be hopeless nihilists while others feel the need to prove themselves to others. Life in a Necropolis is much better for Skeletons, often taking the role of the common man, but can hold elite status. Awakened Ghosts are less common than skeletons and with effective enough disguise can appear to be a normal person, however, they radiate a cold aura that often gives them away. Most people who interact with ghosts only do it because of their curiosity or for the novelty. A rare problem ghosts may have is that they may be the ghost of someone recently dead, in this event they can often cause grief and harm to those grieving their previous life. Ghosts typically always feel that they are unfit or unwelcome with the living, flocking to necropoli where they are often treated well due to their living appearance, a feature which most undead lack. They are often trained as spies, mages, and diplomats. Revenants are already intelligent upon creation, and are driven by their need for revenge against their killers and are born for this purpose alone, they are unlike their awakened brethren in that they do remember their past lives as it is the flame that fuels their existence. How they interact with society depends on their disposition in their past life as well as how powerful the urge is to seek revenge. Most revenants care little for their surroundings but are often welcomed to Necropoli for however long they wish. Wights, like the revenant, retain the memories of their former life. They are significantly rarer than the former awakened undead, and almost never exist outside of Necropoli and the places they guard, those that do often don't seek to integrate with society and keep resigned in isolation. When they are in the presence of the living, they cause fear among the populace due to their ghastly visage. Necropoli dwelling Wights find their purpose as guards, warriors, and paladins. Awakened Mummies are normally found in Sanatrin but sometimes are found in areas of peat bogs (known as Bogmen) or frozen mountains (known as Frost Walkers) they typically lead the Necropoli of their native regions and in some cases make up the population of them. Mummies do seek society but are often met with immediate persecution and almost never venture outside of their regions as a result.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The bodies of Awakened Undead are sourced from their origin species, and vary based on the type of undead they are. Each awakened undead features a stream of magic which keeps thems sustained, these can brighten or become invisible unless detect magic is used, the sensation of doing such is comparable to breathing. Awakened Skeletons are just that, Skeletal cores of a passed creature that no longer contain organs. Awakened Ghosts maintain the appearance of the passed creature, their bodies are made purely of a type of ectoplamsic energy which glows lightly, unlike other awakened undead they cannot make this energy entirely invisible. Their form can become incorporeal, which lets them move through walls. Revenants appear much like zombies but are more composed, typically minimal rotting, the magic that their body is reanimated by allows them to know the location of their revenge target. Wights typically appear to have a sunken appearance and lack eyes much like an awakened skeleton. Mummies always have a very dry appearance, the moisture having been removed from their bodies by the natural process of mummification.

History

Awakened Undead first occured in the Age of the Old kingdoms when the magic of necromancy was mastered, it is thought the first intelligent undead were the wights before the awaken spell was developed. It wasnt long before the awakened undead were used as servants for mummy, vampire, and lich masters. The majority of these undead masters over time were challenged by armies and aventurers who would topple the reign of these dark leaders, leaving the awakened undead behind in the ashes. After hundreds of years of either being supressed or destroyed by the living, some awakened undead would form communities known as Necropoli where they could live together in peace.
