To most inhabitants of the Elpis System, the 100th cycle is a year celebrating the continued survival and defiance - a recognition of the first century spent building new colonies on the edge of the Stream and a look to what might come forward. The turn of a new century helpfully marks the symbolic turning of a page - the transition from survivors to pioneers, and the coming of a shared identity despite political, ethnical, and social differences.
There are population booms across all colonies. In the decade 90-100SA, there were more ships assembled across the system than during the entirety of the eight preceding decades combined. The Hiderid Coalition of Stars looks set to double profits in 101SA, and whilst the Mewei Domain and the Boshaari Council both have inner struggles, fortune smiles upon Matriarchs and Great Houses alike, that prosperity might rain upon the peoples who rely upon them. Outposts are being built in greater numbers than ever - whether reclaimed or brand new. All doubts about possible loss of FTL travel are completely gone, thanks to the Thaumium-heavy world Zindra and the gold rush occuring there. Whilst all inner worlds can withstand heavy amounts of mining, ecological devastation can be avoided thanks to the bountiful wealth afforded by the gas giant Hestia and its giant rings - and foundries can be built orbitally to avoid transporting anything but finished goods dirtside. Companies such as Starlyft, Inc or Express Courier Services are booming - and when fuel runs dry in the tankers, the Fuel Rats or Gas-n-Gulp workers are there to help.
A golden age of interplanetary prosperity, unhoped for a century prior, threatens to unfold. Yet in the darkness, several new threats loom. Piracy is on the rise, fueled by Aethiel Bili's poor decisions in the Wayward Belt or by colonial neglect across lunar and outer system colonies. The Hodeth Alliance has formed to unionize foundry and mining workers against the interest of the new rich - whether Great House lucky winners or corporate tycoons. It joins the Zaalan Free Tribes, representing an entire species scattered across the system and unable to partake in much of the coming wealth.
And what of the political stability of inner systems, so concerned with their own homeworld that they neglect anything beyond geostationary orbit? As the haze of early days fades, so do ties that united colonists with their early colonial masters. Out there in space, all about Nyx and Hepera, pioneers amongst pioneers eke out a living amidst dead rocks full of riches. And if the Valekeepers at Outpost X-5 find their guard duty a boring job, how long is it going to be before something - anything - comes through from the other side of the dormant gateway?
Whilst the Elpis system celebrates a century of enduring survival, many look to the stars with optimism - opportunity awaits, but so does uncertainty, and the burning question - what is normal going to look like?
