Erathis God of Knowledge (eh - rath - es)

Sovereign Erathis, the Ever-Learning One, the Answer Before the Question, the Collector of Secrets, He who Chronicles, The Disfigured One, is the God of Knowledge. Symbolized by a fisherman's knot. He represents the arcane arts, knowledge, and secrets

Overview

Unknown to his followers, his alignment is Lawful Evil. Many of the arcane arts that he treasures are dark magics and ancient secrets, that of relics long forgotten that could be disastrous for the common good. Thankfully, he considers himself a mere chronicler and collector. If he discovers someone approaching one of his personal relics, he may attempt to stop them or send his seekers to get there first. If a mortal asks for great knowledge from him, he may grant it upon a price. When that being dies, they will go to his domain where he will morph and twist their soul to being another of his seekers, an amorphous entity whose default is a shadowy floating figure in a cloak. Capable of changing their forms, they make for excellent scouts, messengers, and guardians

His lust for knowledge has turned into an obsession, forcing him to see secrets in all beings. His ultimate goal is to know everything there is to know amongst all beings that walk this plane. After which he may not be satisfied until he moves onto another plane to do the same

Followers

His followers consist of mostly arcane casters in practice and any individual who would respect that true power comes from knowledge. Dig sites to ruins and voyagers attempting to discover something new may have an alter with them as they are aware that what they unearth could have been put there by Erathis

His devoted are those that can't stand an unanswered question, needing to resolve not only the problem but all aspects of it as well. Highly devoted members or agents of Erathis are expected to remember a tome in its entirety, other members may challenge each other by asking what a specific word on a specific page is or if they can recite a specific passage

Omen

On occasion there will be a fault in the weave, a lapse in ability, it is commonly believed to be Erathis' doing. His followers insist that he is never actually away from his domain such as the other Gods are known to occasionally do. Instead, they say he is merely succumbing to his wounds suffered during the first era and that the hold on his domain faulters. It cannot be known precisely when these lapses occur as the signaling omen could be misinterpreted as uncommon inconvenient occurrences. Across the lands, locations that store a wealth of books such as libraries or academies will experience a range of unfortunate events. These can range anywhere from a leak in the ceiling, the ceiling collapsing, or a fire starting. It is a series of signs for his followers to piece together and begin restoring or chronicling everything they can

What follows is referred to as the "Blip", it can be described as mass lapse in memory. For example, there could be a city with a large castle/keep that is visible to most on any given day, people could spend their whole lives not leaving their city, and one day they might just notice a detail added or missing to the keep such as an additional turret or one that is no longer there. Some will simply assume that they had not noticed the turret before or that they falsely remembered one being there while others will swear that their memory is not false. Another example could be the spelling of a popular brand, some will "remember" it being spelled in another way

Return

When Erathis has composed himself and regained his grip and control of his domain, he will bestow a gift to those whose collections were damaged by his absence. The god will send out his seekers to relay tasks to his followers, usually in the form of a riddle or a note with a hidden cypher. These tasks are taken as the sign of his return and the burden is held as a mark of honor and acknowledgment. These tasks must be done in secrecy or in such a way that is untraceable back to them. A library may receive a shipment of new books from an unknown benefactor, a collector may have a new addition slipped in, some may have new copies of the tomes they lost or find that they have been restored
