Personal history
Married to Livia Payne Gaposchkin, but became an alcoholic and is now estranged from her. Stumbling through the darkness of some razzle-dazzle enchanted forest, breathe stained with rum, the only reminder of Romy’s crazy night out with the lads, it is clear she is completely lost. Considering giving up on her search for the pathway home, hoping the alcohol coursing through her veins will keep her warm through the night, a wisp of red light catches her eye. Following the light, Romy is guided to a clearing where a red stone awaits the unassuming. Magic leaking from the stone, summoning all those near to bathe its beauty but also warning them to be cautious of its untameable power. However, seeing as Romy is as drunk as a pirate, she completely disregards this and is only thinking, ‘Ooo shiny stone, I must touch’. So, swaying towards the relic, ignoring the ancient writings that encircle it, she picks up the stone with her greasy pub food fingers. However, the magic contained within the stone is too intense for her inexperienced mind and body, and as she collapses beneath the weight of the power, her world fades into darkness.
Waking up to the obnoxious words of, “Oh My Jod! Jeansus, are you alright?”, is not a pleasant start to the day, especially when the hangover forming in Romy’s head is almost as nauseating as the man all in denim peering down at her. Assuming Romy had spent the night studying the inscriptions surrounding them, and the stone belonged to her, therefore obviously making her a mighty wizard, Jenson Jorts whisks her away Tarrat Towers. As they travel to Tarrat Towers, which is very conveniently located nearby, Romy blindly agrees to everything Jenson says, as she is far too focused on nurturing her pulsating headache and getting a potion that will soothe her aching body. However, her lack of acknowledgment leads Jenson to create an elaborate story on how Romy is a magic-user, who has spent the past years uncovering the secrets of the world steeped in magic. Inconveniently, this story spreads through Tarrat Towers and reaches the Wardens, who offer her a position as a professor where she can inspire and teach students to pursue the world of magic. In her time at the towers, Romy learns the basic of magic, allowing her to have a few cantrips and spell up her sleeve.
Caught up in her accidental lie, Romy is enraptured by the world of magic and the glory her lie gives her. However, as the euphoria the lie gives her dies down, she is consumed by guilt, but in fear of what the other magic-users might think or do to her, she strays further from the truth. To escape the guilt she harbours, Romy turns to the comfort of rum. Her chaotic behaviour and teaching methods are written off as her perceiving the realities in a way unimaginable, and her constant demand for rum (which is a lot more than the students and professors realise) is believed to help her conjure and control her magic. The red stone remains with her, and the alcohol numbs the connections Romy formed with the stone, preventing her from unlocking her potential as a wizard. However, as the years drift by, Romy spends them drunk, allowing her old life to fade into the forgotten past, and the strength of her magic go unnoticed.
