The Story of the Five Part Bride

Written by thefridler

Once there was a maiden as fair as spring and warm as summer sunset. She would help her simple family by picking wild berries and flowers and selling them at market.   One day a noble family was riding in their carriage when they stopped because of a broken wheel. They just so happened to stop in front of the maiden's humble stand.   From the carriage popped out five brothers all as fair and just as the next. When they all saw the maiden they fell madly in love.   The brothers began to argue and fight over who could marry the girl. The girl who thought them all beautiful could only cry softly and watch helplessly.   After hours of arguing one brother, the youngest among them, asked, "Why must we fight. Truly there must be a fair and just way we could all be happy?"   The brothers went to stay at the local inn and told the weeping maid that they will return on the morrow.   And so, the brothers talked and talked, talked all the night through. It was almost morning when they finally came to their plan. They all approached the fair maid, drew their swords, and hacked her up to pieces.   The Eldest brother took her head; her long hair like silk curtains   The Second Brother took took her arms so slender and soft   The third and fourth took a leg each, so long and graceful   and the youngest took her torso, her breasts as ripe as apples   The brothers were very pleased with themselves. They had been so fair and just with themselves. So they left and lived happily ever after with their 5 part bride.

This story is popularly told amongst the peasant folks in many rural villages. It is often told by local and travelling bards are a classic. Though usually far from the ears of any nobles. The story is surprisingly consistent over varying regions though another popular retelling is that the ghost of the maid haunted the brothers.
