Greater Stag

The massive and elegant greater stags of Thera are a beautiful, yet sad, reminder of a past glory for the Therans. A species once widespread across the continent has since been reduced to a small—yet stable—population that exists in a frozen icy prison in the north.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The greater stag stands about 6 ft 11 in tall at the shoulders and carries the largest antlers of any known deer—a maximum of 12.0 ft from tip to tip and 88 lbs in weight. Their bodies weigh about 1,200–1,300 lbs, making the greater stag truly enormous beasts. Likely due to different social structures, the Irish elk exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, with greater stag bucks being notably larger than does. In total, greater stag bucks range from 990–1,540 lbs, with an average of 1,268 lbs. Does are usually around 80% of an average buck's size, or 1,010 lbs on average.

Genetics and Reproduction

Greater stags have a long gestation period of 6 months and only produce one offspring at a time, meaning they are susceptible to depopulation.

Ecology and Habitats

The elk of the north are unsurprisingly fond of the cooler climates on the far side of the Winterclaw mountains. They stay closer to the open plains and tundras but can be seen in light forests when their antlers are not grown.

Greater Stags are a powerful and majestic species of deer that are exclusive to the kingdom of Thera. They are wild by nature but populations have been domesticated so they are used often by Theran knights and nobles. They are what the horse is to southern kingdoms. Used from as beloved companions, beasts of burden and instruments of war. To hear the call of a hundred Giant Elks in unison is to hear the cold breath of death and iron approaching.

Conservation Status
The species is under royal protection in the Kingdom of Thera. The jarls and high king retain ranches and stables which contain the beasts. While wild populations in small numbers do exist, they are functionally extinct in the wild. Despite these royal and noble protections, poachers and smugglers continue to prey on the stags for their valuable antlers.
