Bewolf's Vikeengriers
To the tune of Barretts Privateers by Stan Rogers
Oh, the year was 90 and 200 Talon
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
A letter of marque came from the throne
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
I was told we'd cruise the seas for Theran gold
We'd fire no bows-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Harviken pier
The last of Bewolf's Vikeengriers
Oh, well said Bewolf cried the town
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
Would make for him the Haakon's crew
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
The Haakon’s Fang was a sickening sight,
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
On the Empress’ birthday we put to sea,
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
We were 91 days to Chambondon Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
On the 96th day we sailed again
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
When a bloody great Elkee hove in sight
With our cracked four druids we made to fight
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
The Elkee lay low down with gold
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Haakon two whole days
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
Then at length we stood two oars away
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
Our cracked four druids made an awful din
But with one fire ball the Elk stove us in
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
The Haakon shook and pitched on her side
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
Bewolf was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the shieldwall carried off both me legs
Gods damn them all!
(Chorus)
So here I lay in my 23rd year
(How I wish I was in the Crowns now!)
It's been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Harviken yesterday
Gods damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for Theran gold
We'd fire no bows-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Harviken pier
The last of Bewolf's Vikeengriers
This drinking song sung as a shanty has an infamous history. It tells a romantic version of the legendary Hakkon's Fang crew. A popular song in Viking halls and Radian fishing villages, this song has been accused of promoting paganism, violence and anti-imperial sentiment. But these accusations seem to do to little to silence the tongues of sailors, shantymen, and drunken history scholars.
