Tevenn Du
The small cog was little more than a speck among the looming cliffs of jagged black stone, the serrated stones piercing the frothing red waters of the Mor Bras. The smashed timbers of others who had been dashed against the rocks now stood as a warning to those ships now following their path. The wind blustered, the emblem of the silver scale on the canvas sheet shifting as the fabric billowed erratically. The sky, perpetually in the reds of sunset or the dim glow of twilight was filled with smoke belched from the three great volcanoes and countless smokestacks built into their slopes. The factory town, a cloud of smoke pierced by hundreds of lights, was built on a bay, flanked by the cliffs. The black walls and towers of the harbor fortress stood silent and ominous as the ship moved past, the flag of the Formorian King hanging idly in the still, smoke-clogged air.
A tangled forest of shipmasts sat at anchor, Gallian cogs sharing berths with Fjallkonaned longships and the silver tri-remes of the Finfolk. The golden ships of the Fées-des-Houles and graceful sleek white hulled ships of the Tuatha de Danaan glistened in an impossible light, their metallic sheen unsullied by the belching smoke and ash. Behind the docks, the town of dark, soot-covered buildings twisted up the three slopes, orange streams of magma giving the vinelike streets an infernal glow as they wound through the forest of pipes and chimneys to the monolithic walls of the castle, its 5 black towers looming over the town in silent judgment.
Demographics
The majority of the permanent population is Formorian. A major port in Faerie, Tevenn Du draws in creatures from all over Faerie, such as the Tuatha de Danaan, various troupes of Re Vihan, and some of the more sociable Finfolk. The archipelago draws a substantial interest from the Dragons as well, who reside in the archipelago.
Bediz (Human) are rare sights, with the exception of the Fjallkonaned. This is starting to change, but only a few independent mortal ships have made the voyage successfully.
Government
Tevenn Du is run by the Formorian King Conand Blackcliff, who oversees the warforge of Tevenn Du of the Formorians for High King Balor. Conand rules with an iron fist. Control is divided between three factions: Cliffwalkers (Fortifications), Forgers (Factories) and Bilgeswimmers (Docks), with Conand having the final say over all decisions.
Defences
Tevenn Du is located in a archipelago of volcanic islands, accessible only via a treacherous set of straits lined with rocky shoals and hidden dangers. This approach is protected by a series of island fortresses and patrolled by Formorian Dreadships. The harbour itself is accessible through a giant archway carved into the cliff, protected by a pair of fortified towers. Steep cliffs surround the harbor, limiting access greatly.
The highest built point in the town is Caer Blackcliff, a 5 towered castle of black stone. surrounding a central keep.
The port is "protected", although this is more of a natural hazard than an intentional defense, by the black headed Beisht Kione a powerful Wyrm that attacks ships. A large fleet or pitched battle certainly will attract its attention.
Industry & Trade
Producing items an an astounding rate, the Formorians of Tevenn Du have acquired large stockpiles, allowing a market to grow. Buyers come from all over Faerie to acquire weapons, armor and tools to equip their factions for war or peace. This in turn, has made the port wealthy in gold, silver and gems. However, its agriculture is struggling, and it must rely on Emain Ablach to support it, creating a general understanding of mutual reliance between the two traditional enemies.
Infrastructure
The warforges of Blackcliff are well known throughout Fairie and have become a crucial factor in any conflict. While less masterfully crafted than the work of the Sidhe smiths of Emain Ablach and will less raw magical power than the forges of Fjallkonan, the scale of the operation, churning out vast amounts of powerful weapons, armors and tools, is astounding and dwarfs that of its rivals. The Formorians effectively control the three volcanoes to power the forges, running an expansive network across hundreds of locations.
Guilds and Factions
Tevenn Du is controlled largely by 3 factions: The Cliffwalkers (Military and Defense), Forgers (Factory workers) and Bilgeswimmers (Dockworkers).
The Cliffwalkers control the naval fleet of Dreadships, the island fortresses and the main harbor fortifications. They also control the garrison and are the most well-armed a powerful in combat. The Cliffwalkers are led by the warrior Afrik Ironbringer, who gained her infamy by openly carrying an iron sword and using iron ammunition against a Sidhe raiding fleet.
The Forgers, led by Beolagh the Clever, often at odds with Afrik Ironbringer. The Forgers control the factories and have the largest numbers and most wealth and resources.
The Bilgeswimmers are led by Feldam the Groveler. Considered the weakest of the factions, they control the docks, relegated to interact with outsiders. Despite their reputation, Feldam has make great strides among the visitors to gain a significant fortune and control over the criminal underworld. Long underestimated, the Bilgeswimmers have an unexpected amount of influence and foreign friends.
A 4th power player holds power to mention. The Dragon Duvaskell operates openly in the city, controlling a sizeable portion of factories, docks and arms.
Architecture
The city is largely made up of stone, mostly from local sources. These materials, combined with the smoke, ash and perpetual twilight, give the entire town a dark, dreary quality. Mostly lit by open lava flows, the town glows with dull reds and oranges.
Geography
Tevenn Du is a Formorian stronghold far in the north of the Faerie Islands, located in a volcanic archipelago. The largest island holds Blackcliff Bay, actually a collapsed volcanic cone. Three semi-active volcanic peaks are still active on the peninsula.
