The Enchantress

The Enchantress, or so the myth goes, was a young woman in a world when magic was forbidden and dangerous. She was noble-born, but she fell in love with a young Blacksmith’s apprentice. When her strict father found out, he flew into a rage, and had the boy killed. He then tried to force her to marry an ugly, rich lord 20 years her senior. When she refused, he took her to the King and Queen at that time. They pleaded with her to reconsider, for otherwise she would die. When she held strong, they ordered her beheaded the very next day.   Well, the sun rose bright and early on that day. The Enchantress was dragged to the block, but as the Headsman sharpened his axe, she sang a note, and a swarm of midnight-black ravens flew over the mountain and freed her. They lifted her up into the air, and as she hovered there, she was rumoured to say, ‘I curse you Royals, for condemning me. I curse you, and you and yours shall rue this day.’   Then she flew away and was never seen again.

Summary

The Enchantress is a legend, a bogeyman hiding under the bed. That being said, she is also still, after the legend has been around for so long, rumoured to be hiding out in the Swamplands.

Historical Basis

There was a young woman who loved a blacksmith's son, her father was angry, and she was meant to be executed. Instead of a magical swarm of ravens, it is more likely that she was freed from the dungeon by someone, or escaped herself. She is almost certainly not still alive.

Spread

The legend is very common. Whenever something goes wrong, especially if it happens to the royal family, she is to blame.

In Literature

There are many epics written about the Enchantress and her eventual revenge.
