North Ocean

Sparsely populated and explored, the North Ocean is central to few countries, mainly Helvara, northern Pelagia, and Valeria. The waters are icy cold year round and are quite deep with snow as a constant companion on the seas. Freezing to death is the greatest threat when sailing these waters, fortunately the snow dissipates when near land during the warmer seasons, this has made the spring and summer the preferred trading seasons. Angulin, the ancestral homeland of the dwarves lies in the far north at the top of the world and there the most remote of trading ports can be found. Although not as profitable as the trade between the White and Emerald Seas, the North Ocean and its isolated trade post are the only region from which dwarven wares of quality nearly as good as ancient times can be found. This distinction still draws brash merchants and adventurers to brave the freezing waters in efforts to deal in these coveted goods.

Climate

Ice floes and roving icebergs are a common sight on this sea, and must be avoid accordingly. Most ships are not equipped to handle these hazards. Only the Icebreakers of Valeria, Pelagia and Helvara are specifically designed as such and have a Sea Mage on deck to ward away the ice or to blast or melt it apart.

Fauna & Flora

During Autumn and Winter, this sea becomes host to a particularly nasty Sea Giant species called the Glacial Squid. Usually confined to the Kranserhav around Angülin, these beasts have the appearence of a roving glacier with a maw of vicious teeth under the surface. Unwary prey or imperceptive sailors mistake it for mere ice and if ignored, prey will be eaten, and if attempted to be harmed by an Icebreaker crew, the ice will shatter away and reveal the rime-ridden shell of the now enraged Sea Giant who will often tear the ship apart if the crew is unable to quickly flee.
Seals live in this sea year long and live on the ice floes, or larger icebergs, during mating season they head north to the Kranserhav for five months.
Smaller squid can be found here, and are a considered a delicacy by sailors and nations in the north.
Angülin Terns are a common sight here, and like to fish the small prey that inhabit the surface waters.
In terms of fishing, North Sea Sturgeon, Helvaran Salmon, and Nothosi Cod are the most popular species for fisherman braving the challenging waters.
North Sea Orcas are also a danger to be aware of, they feast on the seals and squid and large packs are known to even take down Glacial Squid if they feel they can take one.
Another common seabeast is the North Sea Shark, which is hunted by Helvaran and Pelagic fishermen, though this is often only done for sport or in desperation as they are tricky to safely hunt.
Frostback Whales and Narwhals are also commonly found in the North Sea, and are hunted for their blubber and horns.
