The North

Overview: The North refers to the northernmost region of Chernaya, including parts of the Midlands that blend into this rugged and isolated area. Known for its harsh climate and challenging terrain, the North is both a frontier and a strategic stronghold. While the Crown maintains significant influence in key locations, the region also preserves a sense of local autonomy, particularly in Rostova.
  Key Locations:
The Free City (Rostova): Rostova, known locally as Rustov, is the economic and political hub of the North. It serves as a vital trade center, especially during the warmer months. The city is home to one of the primary academies of the Watch and hosts a significant Regiment presence. However, the Crown's forces know not to push too hard against the powerful merchant families and Guilds that dominate Rostovan politics, leading to a delicate balance of power.
Skalliheim: A growing settlement in the far north, Skalliheim is being developed around an ancient monolith under the watchful eye of Beren the Bald, a well-respected general. The Regiment’s strong presence here underscores the Crown’s strategic interests in expanding and securing this remote area. Significance:
Crown Influence: The Crown exerts considerable control in the more populated areas of the North, particularly through the Watch and Regiment stationed in Rostova and Skalliheim. However, this influence is tempered by the need to respect local power structures, especially the merchant families and Guilds of Rostova, who hold significant sway in the city’s governance. This results in a political balancing act where the Crown's authority coexists with local autonomy.
The Midlands Overlap: The northern regions of the Midlands share many characteristics with the North, including the rugged terrain and the self-reliant communities. These areas, while less populated, still feel the Crown's presence, though it is more sporadic compared to the stronger control seen in cities like Rostova.
