Divine Symbols & Sigils
The Sorrowful God is most often depicted as a middle-aged woman. She is very frequently looking down, sometimes at a globe, and is frequently weeping. Occasionally she extends a hand or has open arms. She usually wears a loose flowing dress. She may also hold a baby in her arms or be depicted surrounded by children. Her symbol is a tear or sometimes a baby. She is usually dressed plainly. Her colours are blue, white and silver.
The most famous temple of the Sorrowful God is in Bi'tsng'ot Delta. The largest shrine in the Temple of the Divine Messenger in Bi'tsng'ot is dedicated to the Sorrowful God in her characterisation as 'The Giving Mother'. A vast statue is carved in basalt. It depicts her as a middle-aged, Espirion woman in a long hooded cloak. She is down on one knee, looking down on her people with her arms outstretched to welcome them. In the Bi'tsng'ot Temple her priestesses, the Sisters of Charity, raise orphans and hand out alms to the poor in her name.
Tenets of Faith
The Sorrowful God, in most texts, calls on her followers to:
- Respect their mothers (and women more generally)
- Treat children with tenderness
- Show compassion
- Consider others with empathy
- Donate to charity on special occasions
- Treat others with kindness
- Volunteer to help the poor and needy
Holidays
Mothers Day - Practised most commonly in Western Nangkap. Instituted by law in some jurisdictions there.
Giving Day - A gift giving celebration in spring. Donations are made to charities and gifts are given to children.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
The Sorrowful God is notable as the most goal-oriented of the polyarchist deities. While most the deities represent states of being and moral values, the Sorrowful God does this as well as working towards the goal of alleviating suffering in the world. This aspect of the Sorrowful God is represented by her aspect as the Giving Mother. As the Giving Mother, she is depicted handing out food, medicine and gifts to the needy and she is worships by the Matrons of Plenitude, a religious order of clerics who work actively in charity.
