The Glistening Blade

Hark! There goes a valiant King
Swift on his mount, he who unites
Such disparate peoples.
Surely he is my Lord.

No gods can save his enemies,
From his gleaming edge:
Conquest forged into metal
By the ancestors!
From the 'Song of the Righteous Conqueror', Unknown Author, circa 850BU, Bairek

History

The Glistening Blade is a longsword forged by the College of Mages in the year 853BU at the start of the future King Marnador I's conquest of Bairek
The conquering warlord came across the fortress of the mages, Valnasteron, and saw an opportunity. He sought to make the mages allies. He promised them that he would support their independence and freedom if they supported his military campaign and protected his people from dangerous magic.
The mages were not soldiers and so sought a creative solution to allow them to fulfil their duties under the concordat. They offered to house any mages the warlord's men found throughout the new kingdom they were building; keeping them in Valnasteron away from the general populous would be safer for everyone it was decided. They also offered to make Marnador a sword greater than any other.
The magisters gathered to plan promptly. They forged a longsword of silver and set it with jewels. Then they gathered under the full moon and called magic from the otherworld and imbued into the sword unnatural power.
Once it was enchanted, the sword was so sharp that it could cut stone. The gems shone like stars and everyone who looked upon it knew instinctively that it was unearthly. It never tarnished and was only safe when sheaved in its enchanted scabbard.
