Magister
Requirements
When one of the magisters dies, the most senior members of that magister's school takes their role. Usually, the former magister has already given this person the title 'First Adept' to indicate his chosen successor. In the rare case when the magister did not name a successor, the senior member of the school becomes the new magister, seniority is usually determined simply by rank although the Magisterium can also impose magical challenges or tests of knowledge.
There have been cases when there was no other member of the school save the former magister. In that case, the seat of the magister is vacant until a suitable candidate can be identified by the remaining magister through a series of tests. If there is ever a tied vote in the Magisterium or Synod, the Archmage breaks the tie.
Appointment
The transition of power is instant at the death of a magister. This is symbolised by the transition of the magisters staff. The same 17 staves have been passed down since the original 17 mages founded the College. An addition staff, the Archmage's staff, which also existed since the founding of the College, is an additional part of the set.
The staves are made of metal, topped by crystals. They allow the bearer to manipulate more powerful magic reducing the risk of adverse affects.
