Haravi

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Haravi have two arms and two legs with joints much like humans and with 5 fingers on each hand and 5 toes on each foot. They have plantigrade legs with very large, strong hand and feet. They're able to grip using and manipulate objects using both their hand and feet which facilitates agile climbing in tree canopies. Their digits on both their hands and feet are long, strong and can move independently allowing a high degree of dexterity. They also have strong tails which help them balance and which they are able to use to manipulate objects.   They have fairly long snouts (although this is highly variable between populations) and large nostrils. They have large canine teeth but also have distinct molars and incisors to facilitate their omnivorous diet. They have two eyes and two ears with external cartilaginous parts of various forms depending on ethnic group. Their eyes are most often brown but sometimes grey or orange.   Their bodies are covered in fur which can be of various lengths and may be grey, beige or brown. The soles of their feet and palms of their hands are not covered in hair and are instead covered in thicker skin. Most Haravi groups have thicker hair on their heads, down their backs, around their groin and under their arms. Some groups have variegated fur with lighter patches on their stomachs for example. Their tails are also covered in fur of varied length and thickness. They have finger nails which may look like claws when long but which are usually worn down. Under their fur, and on their hands a feet, their exposed skin is most often black, dark brown or dark grey.   The Haravi are naturally physically stronger than the Espirion or Tamijhiin. They climb trees and cliffs with ease. They mostly stand on two legs but are capable of running very quickly on all four limbs.   An Earthling might find their features to be somewhat similar to a monkey. The various Haravi ethnic groups are highly morphologically varied and might be compared to the Earth macaque, baboon or mandrill (although without such colourful snouts).

Ecology and Habitats

The Haravi are naturally adapted to rainforest dwelling. They easily climb and frequently live in tree houses.   There exist communities of Haravi living in other forests, for example in the more temperate forest of Banyek. They are also communities of Haravi living on planes who have mostly left their tree dwelling primordial state.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Haravi are omnivorous. They are unable to produce many essential nutrient and so must eat a diversity of food groups, including meat and various types of plant which are plentiful in their native rain forest habitat.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The centre of Haravi population is the great jungle in Easter M'dia. There are many Haravi in North M'dia due to the slave trade. The ancient Amalorian Empire destroyed much of the ancient Haravi civilisation and took many Haravi as slaves. Even since the fall of the old empire, the Pa'ete Barons have mediated a continued slave trade with Haravi taken from their homes as far as Bairek or even Okredek.   During the Amalorian assaults on the Haravi homeland, many Haravi managed to escape to the East. The people of M'dia are completely unaware of the Haravi civilsation which has persisted on many of the islands to the east and to the south-east ever since this original escape some two thousand years ago. These Haravi settlements outside of M'dia have been separate for such a long time that they are ethnically and culturally distinct of the M'dian Haravi.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Haravi have exceptional senses compared to the other races of Alter. Only the Tamijhiin have a comparable sense of smell and no other sentient species has a comparable sense of hearing.   Many Haravi believe they have prophetic dreams although this is disputed, especially by Espirion scholars.
