Archmage

The Archmage is selected by the Magisterium of the College. According to the Statutes and Concordats of the College, the Archmage must be the most accomplished mage of the order. The Magisterium generally chooses one of their own number. In the past, the magisters have used the following factors to make their decision:

• The accolades earnt by the candidate during their time at the College. For example, how quickly they completed their training as a neophyte or how soon after becoming an acolyte they became an adept. Mages who complete noteworthy feats are given additional titles such as 'senior acolyte/adept'.
• The feats of magic they have completed in the past.
• Their performance in magical challenges devised by the magisters.
• Their performance in tests of knowledge devised by the magisters.
• Their contribution to the advancement of the College internationally.
• Their contribution to the leadership of the College.

When the old Archmage dies, the new Archmage is appointed as soon as possible. The new Archmage presides over the funeral of the old Archmage.   The Archmage's symbols of office are a silver diadem and staff. The Archmage's diadem is enchanted with protective enchantments. The staff is made of an alloy of silver and topped with a large faintly blue diamond. After the funeral of the former Archmage, the magisters gather on the next full moon to perform a ritual to reinforce the enchantments on the staff and diadem. At the end of this ritual, the new Archmage is crowned.    Usually a gathering of the full Synod is called to introduce the new Archmage to them. This means that all the Court Wizards from across the land are recalled to Valnasteron. These gatherings of the Synod are also an opportunity for the new Archmage to propose changes to the Statutes of the College which are then voted on by those gathered.

The Archmage represents the College internationally and chairs the Magisterium and Synod.
