Old Altairian - Language

Altairus is a big place with a wealth of ancient history. Old Altairian, as it is called, is an ancient precursor to the common language that most Altairians speak. It is actually a conglomerate of several languages, stitched together from Altairians all over the world discovering and forging relations with each other.

While Old Altairian isn't used in everyday conversation anymore, it still plays an important role in Altairus. Some words in this language do not translate well to modern Altairian, so they are still used to describe certain spells, recipes, and other things. It can also be used to obscure important information from prying eyes to those not familiar with the language, predominantly Earth-dwellers.

Syntax

Old Altairian is most similar to German in structure. In a declarative sentence, the subject comes first, then the verb, then the object. Adjectives are placed before the words they are describing, as are adverbs.

In an interrogative sentence, the verb comes before the subject.

An imperative sentence is written the same as a declarative sentence, except the verb has the suffix -ag attached to it (see suffixes chart).

Phonetics

Old Altairian sounds Latin in some places and Germanic in others. It makes use of characters and pronunciations present in both languages.
