The Saltspray

The Saltspray is the fishing vessel owned and operated by Iago Pavia, an imported Roza Islander. He worked on her when she was owned by Mako Vilmer, a Grenagan fisherman Iago apprenticed himself to. After Mako succumbed to alum-rot in the year 142, possession of The Saltspray passed to Iago. The ship itself is nothing pretty. A rusted hull, tangled rigging, everything smells of fish, but to Iago, she represents his home. He feels the closest to his Islands when he is out at sea, with nothing but the wind and water to comfort him. He often entertains the fanciful dream of escaping Grenagem into the open ocean, perhaps he could return home. But he knows deep in his heart that he can never escape the might of the Grenagan airships. Still, though, its a nice thought for him.   The most interesting aspect of The Saltspray is not its its fishing capacity or its dented and anguar hull, but the smuggling stash concealed under its deck. Mako Vilmer, while fishing by day, moonlighted as a smuggler by night, and had modified his ship to suit his needs. The last job Mako took before he grew sick and died was the transport of Nubhuh religious texts. Despite having apprenticed himself to Mako, Iago never knew of his teacher's nocturnal activities and still hasn't discovered the existence of the hidden compartment. He doesn't realize that something very dear to his childhood and culture's religion sits just below his feet; something which the Ministry of Jurisprudence very much wants to destroy.
