Shadesvale Cemetery

That place gave me the creeps, I swear, at night you can see things moving in there.

  • Purpose / Function

Shadesvale Cemetery was one of the first cemeteries to be established within the city of Grenagem, and as such, it is extremely old. Created even before Grenagem came under the rule of the matriarchy, people have been burying their loved ones in Shadesvale for centuries.   Because of the overgrown nature of the hill Shadesvale is set upon, many criminals prefer to use its foliage to conceal their dealings from any prying eyes. So it is not an uncommon sight to hear or glance movement on the hill in the dead of night. It's only those trying not to be seen, and probably not the dead come to haunt the city... probably.

    Architecture

Built on a wooded hill, Shadesvale seems almost more of a contained forest than a cemetery at times. The original design was to foster a connection to nature within the center of an urban environment, however, a lack of proper grounds keeping has turned the cemetery to a overgrown mess. Small claustrophobic paths wind their way through its grounds passing headstones poking out of the undergrowth.

    History

Established hundreds of years ago, the Shadesvale Cemetery is the final resting place for thousands of bodies. Over the years, as space grew more and more scarce, the distance between plots shrank, and then graves were placed on top of one another. Now, the Empire prefers anonymous mass graves for lower class workers, and so Shadesvale, a cemetery squarely in the slums of Sludgeside, has fallen into disuse. Its lack of new occupants, however, does not solve the overcrowding of previous tenants. The bodies are laid so thick within the hill that when powerful storms pass through bones can often be found sticking up out of the dirt, and sometimes washed out of the cemetery and onto surrounding sreets.
