Grand Museum of Exploration and Invention

Purpose / Function

The GMEI is a project of the empire meant to chronicle the discovery of La Tantani and other major colonies, as well as the alumentum in those regions, and what devices have been created within the empire to make use of this resource.   Besides being a means for the empire to recapitulate its achievements, the GMEI is a place that the public are encouraged to visit, as a means of building up the empire's grandeur. The empire has made sure the displays in the museum accentuate the ideals the empire stands for, and that they don't discuss more controversial or problematic aspects of these parts of the empire's history. The manner in which this has been done has caused criticisms, such as decrying the museum as propaganda, from more vocal subversives in Grenagem.

Alterations

With each major technological breakthrough pioneered by empire engineers, the museum is expanded and rearranged to include an exhibit for the invention. Additionally, a board of curators regularly maintains the museum, keeping track of attendance and public reception, and modifying existing exhibits accordingly.   The GMEI has been expanded significantly since its construction 50 years ago to accomodate all manner of new and modified exhibiits.

Architecture

The GMEI is located in a bustling commercial district so that it attracts a wide audience. The main building of the museum is a three-story behemoth that dwarfs its surroundings. It is illuminated with Alumentum lighting and furnished with the most modern utilities.   The GMEI has two other buildings that were constructed after the original creation of the museum. There is the Hall of Aeronautics, which is open to the skies for airship demonstrations, and a building with a massive map of the empire's territories carved into the floor. This building is where exhibits pertaining to exploration are largely housed. Everything else, including all non-airship related alumentum inventions, is in the main museum building.

History

The empire had the GMEI constructed to commemorate its centennial. Once it was finished, after a year and a half, the museum attracted significant attention from the public. Although interested waned slightly after several years, it never dipped to a level the empire was dissatisfied with, and as time went on it stabilized and gradually began to gain popularity again as more alumentum inventions were created.   In the last 15 years or so, attendance has started dipping again, and the museum's board has only recently decided this is severe enough to be a concern. They have begun seeking ways to drum up business in conjunction with the Grenagem council.
