Fechadura

Purpose / Function

Fechadura is a hidden government facility, not known to the general public, where rebels and those who directly oppose the government in what is labeled a treasonous fashion are imprisoned. People might spend decades locked in this underground complex before being moved to a general prison, or in some cases being released (or executed).   Fechadura's prisoners are told nothing about where they are, what crime they committed to be placed there, or how long they will be kept. Generally, if a rebel is captured and their friends can't find out anything about what happened to them, it is said they "went downstairs", and people act as if they died. In many cases, they might as well have.

Architecture

Fechadura goes eight stories below the floor of an empire-owned warehouse. It has alum-powered lifts and numerous guard stations. Prisoners are never taken to the surface, and guards are ordered to prevent the prisoners from seeing natural light.   The prison has individual cells for subversives deemed dangerous enough that the guards can't risk them spreading their ideology or harming the other prisoners. Other prisoners are kept together in large cells, where six or more of them might be grouped together. The facilities for the prisoners are minimal on some floors and nonexistent on others. Even the guards' resources are utilitarian.

History

Fechadura was first constructed with only three levels about 90 years ago during a rash of uprisings and revolts. The empire made a significant push to stamp out their civilian opposition. While this wasn't as successful as many government officials at the time would have liked, it was sufficient to return Grenagem to normalcy. Many rebel leaders and other prominent activists were captured at this time and kept in Fechadura, in one case for forty years. Many of these prisoners also died in captivity.   There has never been a raid on Fechadura by rebels, though a small number do know the prison's locations. The concensus among rebels is that it's far too risky for the reward of freeing people who, for all they know, are already dead.
