Personal history
Anette had an unremarkable upbringing. She was always a conscientious and hardworking pupil, but when she was pushed to choose a career, she sought academic positions that involved little real responsibility. Her teachers chided her for this, seeing great potential in her to serve the state. For reasons she had trouble articulating, Anette waffled in deciding on a post to the point that she came under criticism.
Anette made up her mind that she wanted to be a State Matron when she stumbled upon an underground anti-empire meeting being broken up. She found the manner in which the dissenters were attacked, rounded up, and carted off to languish in prisons to be overly violent and repugnant. She started trying to do some digging on these affairs and found out about a great deal of opposition to the empire that she had previously been unaware of. At this time, government agents grew suspicious of her, so she committed to being a State Matron.
Anette's progress as a Matron was slow, both in terms of status, percieved success, and subversive agenda. She played her job straight for nearly a decade while maintaining and developing her own private objections to the way the empire ran things. Eventually, her views became more radical, and she started passing this on to her students in small ways. Over time, she has grown more overt in her teachings to question and criticize the empire, and she is beginning to come under scrutiny again.
Failures & Embarrassments
One of Anette's favorite students, after graduating and leaving Anette's care, was arrested during an effort to assist Tantani slum-dwellers despite empire mandates. Anette doesn't know the student's current status, but she fears they might be dead. She is also ashamed of how concerned she is for her own safety, as she fears her student might have revealed information about her to the empire after being captured.
Mental Trauma
Anette deals with anxiety relating to having to hide her beliefs, and worries greatly about protecting her students from the darker side of the empire. She dislikes the pressure that is put on her by having to raise the next generation, but she considers it a vital undertaking and would never give it up.

Anette wants the empire to improve in many areas, and believes she can best contribute to this by teaching her students not to take what they experience for granted; she wants them to want change as much as she does, and to make it happen over time.
