Alum Mining Suit
Mechanics & Inner Workings
The biggest hurdle for the suit was material and cost. Nothing was light and durable. So a mixture of leather and iron was used to create the suits. Thick pieces of hide are used along the chest and torso being studded together with iron. An oil is used to keep the leather from breaking. Thinner more flexible hide us used for the arms, hands and hood, to allow for optimal movement. The mask is a thick cloth stretched between pieces of iron that rest on the jaw and cheeks. The mask is then latched to the hood of the suit. This is replaced when the cloth begins to be stained blue from excess Alumentum.
Significance
The Alumentum mining suit. A feat of engineering brought forth to help miners deal with Alumentum exposure. It didn’t take long for people to realize that Alum was dangerous to the human body. What did take a while, was any response on the issue from the government. Even after pressure started to amount from the miners, the issues were given to a few engineers as a side project. It didn’t take long for them to realize that prolonged skin exposure was extremely dangerous. First came the suit. This calmed the miners for a while. Flash forward a couple generations and many of these miners were dying young. The next addition to the mining outfit was a mask that helped to keep the miners from breathing in the dust.
