Wulf

The wulf is the most common dragon species in Hiland with subspecies specialized to the various regions, most notably the Green Wulf, Spotted Wulf, White Wulf, Black Wulf, and Tiger Wulf.   While each subspecies has distinct features that help them survive in their environment, they all share the same basic traits and behaviors. The signature sickle shaped claw on each of its hands and feet is held off the ground to keep it razor sharp. The wulfs uses these specialized claws to hack and slicing through the flesh of their prey. Long spines growing from its neck can vibrate at high speeds, producing a high pitched sound that it uses to communicate with other wulfs. Males are distinguished by the small crests protruding from their brows. These crests serve no known purpose other than to identify males from females.   Wulfs hunt primarily small mammals such as squirels and deer.   Wulfs hunt in packs of three to five individuals, but some packs have been numbered with over a dozen wulfs. Communication between the members of the pack is vitally important to effectively execute coordiated attacks. The long spines protruding from the wulfs' neck quiver rapidly to produce high frequency clicks that the wulfs use to speak to each other. When defending against an enemy the pack will split up, allowing a flanker to move behind and ambush the threat from behind.

Green Wulf

Also called the Woodland Wulf, they mostly lurk in the plains and hills of Central Hilana but can be found in every biome of the continent. Other wulf species include the Spotted Wulf, the White Wulf, the Black Wulf , and the Tiger Wulf.

They are considered a nuisance rather than threats, stealing sheep and other livestock from town flocks and pestering the townsfolk. Growing an average of 1 meter tall and mottled green and gray in color, these dragons are comparatively small to other species.

Packs are always headed by an alpha male who leads the subordinate males and females in search of food. When hunting or traveling, wulfs will usually drop to all fours as they walk. When running they switch to a bipedal stance to allow for better agility and speed. They generally avoid direct contact with humans, choosing to strike at night when the flocks of sheep and cattle tthey target are less guarded. Any animal left outside of a protective barn or shed becomes easy pickings for a wulf pack.

Confronting a wulf pack alone is foolish and a sure death sentence. The best way to confront a wulf pack is with a group armed with torches and spears. The appearance of a large threat is often enough to send the pack scampering back to the safety of the forest, but on rare occasions a starving pack will attack out of desperation. Wulfs are lean and fast, their bipedal stance making them especially nimble. When under a wulf attack, it is best to clump into a large group with torches and spears extended. Yelling and throwing rocks are also effective deterrents.

The only creature wulfs will not dare to attack is the Rattle Dread. Packs will take wide detours to avoid Rattlers because a Rattler will not hesitate to devour a wulf. Wulfs are incapable of breathing fire which puts them at a disadvantage against Rattlers who can. A Rattler's size and strength are also reasons to avoid them. Even with their strength in numbers, a wulf pack would not be able to kill a Rattler without sustaining significant casualties and the victory would be meaningless.
