Banthu

Coloquially called Nad'ki by the Seltiks, these herbivores have long trunks and enormous, heavily muscled front legs that are perfect from stomping through ice. Found mostly in the East Plateau, these animals use their powerful legs to smash through the frozen ground to reach the grass beneath the snow. A thick layer of fat and heavy fur coat protect it from the subzero temperatures and two long tusks growing from its jaw and two shorter horns protruding from its skull present a formidible defense.

Banthus travel in large herds for safety and to prevent from getting lost. At night, the banthus will hudle together around their young and sickly to form a barrier with their thick bodies. The members forming the perimeter stand facing outwards, while those behind them rest their heads on the others' backs, pointing their tusks and horns to the sky. This behavior presents a bristling wall of bodies and spikes that deters both aerial and terrestrial nighttime hunters and helps the mamoxen conserve body heat.
