Clans within Alphatia
Two clans contest the islands of Alphatia still controlled by the Xeng using them as staging grounds for their trading fleets. The Mantis clan consider the isle of Dong to be an extension of the islands of silk and spice, a province of the Empire. The Crane clan have maintained the political control and trading houses from the Emperor's invasion. The two continue to compete for ultimate control of the island and the riches the Alphatian Isles can bring to the Xeng Empire under their mercantile control.
Crane Clan
The Crane Clan, Left Hand of the Emperor, was known throughout Rokugan for its skilled duelists and artisans. The Crane were also noted courtiers, wielding great power in the courts of the land. The Crane were founded by the Kami Doji. They pursued excellence in all things, and the traditions established by Lady Doji were now customary in the Emperor's Court. The formal dueling system, iaijutsu, was established by Doji's husband, Kakita. Their preferential status with the Imperial line was renowned and throughout history the clan had had fewer taxes and more gifts heaped upon them. They were the masters of the courts and had the status and wealth commensurate with such a position.
Crane Clan Families
- Asahina - Magic-users of the clan, with many sorcerers from this bloodline.
- Daidoji - Military might of the clan, most likely to be seen within the isles
- Doji - Voice of the clan and control much of the politics within Rokugan.
- Kakita - Famed duelists, in the iaijutsu style and exemplary artisans
Mantis Clan
The Mantis Clan is one of the Great Clans of Rokugan (one of the great nations of the Xeng Empire). Prior to the Second Day of Thunder, they could boast of being the oldest Minor Clan in the Empire, though they were not officially recognized as such. They occupied a unique position in Rokugani history, as a former Minor Clan that rose up on the Second Day of Thunder to become a Great Clan. Until recently, they were the only Great Clan without a divine representative. This changed, however, when the great Mantis hero Yoritomo ascended to Tengoku. Later, the Thunder Dragon gave up a portion of her divinity to allow Yoritomo to remain as the Mantis' official representative in the court of Tengoku.
Specifically, their duties within the Emerald Empire are to guard and patrol all the lands of the Empire which do not belong to any other clan, including the seas of Rokugan. They protect the Empire against threats from the oceans, particulalrly any potential gaijin invaders.
The clan's motto is "Only a fool stands in the path of a storm."
