" We call these the cavern dwellers," murmured the professor. "We should bring him back to study it more in depth," said Karlok. His mentor looked at him funny. " I ... What are your plans ? " Karlok looked the professor right in his eyes with assurance. " I only think we could learn a lot about them and be the first to really study their behavior," said Karlok trying to hide his excitement. "I hate when you do that," said the professor. "You give me a very logical answer, but I know it's not really what you have in the back of your mind," he continued. "We have less than one hour left, there's no time to study it here," replied Karlok. The professor looked at the strange animal, his eyes shinning at the though of being the first one to uncover the secrets of these animals. "Fine, let's hope he can survive the trip back" he finally said.
Looking through the glass of his mansion, Karlok was analyzing the little creature him and his mentor brought back from their trip. The animal was rather easy to lure and capture. It had been another mater to keep it alive. Only when Karlok suggested it needed to drink water and eat food daily, like the tales about the elves of old, that his guinea pig felt better and regained some strength. Over the weeks to follow, he saw the intelligence in the eyes of the animal, in fact, it was more than an animal. Karlok understood better than his old mentor what the implications were. They had found another intelligent living being. Although primitive, he had a language and he found out how the handle of the door was working. The professor thought it was only a coincidence, but the young prodigy knew better. Quickly he started recording the sounds the beast was doing. He found a rich pattern of letters and intonations characteristic of the advanced language they themselves used. It took him many sleepless nights to figure out the words and intonations necessary to be understood by the creature, but low and behold, he succeeded. Despite his mentor disapproval, he was regularly entering the room where they kept the creature and talked with it. He learned a lot about it. He called himself Raemir and he was the son of a shaman in his tribe. He already had a good understanding about the gods magic, a form of magic banned from being used in the faeries societies. So when Karlok showed him the dream magic, the creature understood it was not to be feared. As Karlok was learning the language of the halfling, he was teaching him the use of dream magic.
The imp sighted, today was the last try he would do with his subject. He already failed many times, the halfling calling the magic of his god to try and impress his fairy mentor. Karlok pushed the door, smiled at Raemir. "Let's try this one more time, if you don't succeed I'll bring you back home. I brought a gift to you," said Karlok while handing out a necklace made of dream stone. The halfling looked at him with eyes filled with despair, he took the necklace with a bow and put it on. " Thank you. I meditated all nigh to try and do this, I hope I won't disappoint you," said Raemir. The imp sat on the floor with his legs crossed and invited the other to join him. The halfling sit and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath. Sweat started coming trickling down his forehead. But low and behold, he slowly started levitating. At first it was only a few centimeter from the ground, but soon his head reached the ceiling. "You did it !" yelled Karlok. Raemir broke his concentration and fell to the ground.
The triumph Karlok had imagined was not to happen. He gathered the council of magic to show them how Raemir could learn the dream magic and the energy was not coming from the fairies themselves. Unfortunately he was expelled from the meeting with his monkey puppet. Some believed him, but the vast majority of old sorcerers where in total opposition. He sent the halfling back to his world, he stayed with them for a couple of months before coming back. He saw what he had missed when he did the demonstration. The dream magic was not coming from the fairies, but it was directly linked to the dream stone. The fairies have a special links to the dream world and they can access the dream stone energies from everywhere, but for a non fairy to use the dream magic, they need a dream stone near them. He never told of his discoveries to anyone. Instead he pushed his research alone in his mansion. Carefully balancing the use of dream magic energy. He became obsess with the balance of energies and he applied it everywhere in his life. He pushed his research so much that most of his accomplishment wouldn't be understood for another five hundred years.
