The Highroads

Purpose / Function

They were built to provide a quick method of transportation between important elven landmarks. The Highroads worked through stations, which were nothing more than a small room built within the earth and a door. Every individual Highroad was meant to connect to one single sister location, usually not "too far away". If they were activated, great metal doors at either location would open and allow people to walk through a small tunnel that would magically lead you to a destination miles away in the span of a few minutes. This Nowadays, most of the Highroads have been either lost to time or broken. Only a few Highroads remain standing, lying forgotten in the wilderness.

Architecture

The Highroads and their stations looked like all other elven buildings. The outside was made of stone and built up with great towers and a paved stone road leading up to the entrance, usually guarded by impressive stone statues. Back when they were still in use, people would sometimes travel to certain Highroad stations simply to see the impressive and mystical architecture. All Highroad stations were built with a certain theme or deity in mind. Some Highroad station entrances still look mostly intact, but these are very rare exceptions. Most Highroad entrances left standing are now nothing more than a large pile of rubble and sometimes a weak, stone arch leading into a rocky inside, since all Highroad stations were built on the sides of the ground so that the inside chamber would be below the ground.

History

The Highroads were built by the elves long ago, during the days of the First Era. The roads were only built around the area of the future Kingdom of Essaryn, which has now fallen. Originally, the Highroads were going to be actual roads running through underground tunnels that would connect every major location at the time together. This plan turned out to be too unrealistic and the idea of creating pseudo tunnels connected together by magic was born. Many elven mages worked hard to create the Highroads, and eventually, they successfully connected the first two Highroad stations together.
Time passed, and the Highroads became popular among important people and small garrisons of soldiers who needed to march across the lands rapidly. But, with the waning of an Era at hand and the collapse of the elven civilizations, the Highroads became abandoned and have been left in ruins ever since.
