USING HYBRID MECHANICS
This game uses Traveller and Silhouette mechanics interchangeably. Don't worry, it's easy and there is little to no 'conversion' or such necessary. But this means that all of the mechanics in Traveller (ship combat, trading, etc) can be used without missing a beat even though we're actually using Silhouette. Even better, all of the equipment, vehicles, spaceships and all the other published material can be used almost 'as written'. No muss-no fuss.
TRUST ME-I've been working and playing SOLO games using this hack for about 5 years now.
TRAVELLER MECHANICS
Since you’re here, I know you’re familiar with Traveller. It’s a 2d6 system with +/- coming from Attributes, Skills and Modifiers. I never liked in Traveller that Attribute bonuses were as good as Skills. Combining that with the 8+ roll even on Average tasks waters down the lifelong Pilot or veteran Soldier when someone with a high DEX can walk in and perform at an almost equal level. In Traveller (and Silhouette), skills are low except where you have focused your character’s development. This makes the Attribute=Skill problem even more pronounced.
BUT… the mechanics are simple, there is tons of supplementary material out there, and the other meta-systems within Traveller have stood the test of time (ie. trading, ship construction etc.).
>Dice
Example
Gina has a DEX of 8 (+1) and is a skilled Pilot-2. She rolls 2d6 and gets (2,4). She adds her skill (+2) and attribute (+1) for a total of 9. She succeeds at an Average Task with 1 Effect.
SILHOUETTE MECHANICS
Silhouette is a system used for Heavy Gear. It’s a d6 pool system that tacks almost perfectly onto Traveller stats and mechanics. The difference is that in Silhouette your SKILL determines the number of d6 rolled and your Attribute bonus is applied to highest roll. The Target Numbers are smaller--almost exactly 1/2 Traveller Difficulties. An Average task in Traveller becomes an Average task in Silhouette--done! Now almost every Traveller mechanic can be used with Silhouette. The system also uses Margins of Success (Effect) just like Traveller but incorporates them directly into mechanics. For example, your Margin of Success is a multiplier to weapon damage etc. The Silhouette system also has a couple more Attributes. There are ones that perfectly map onto Traveller equivalents (DEX becomes Agility, etc.) and a couple other Attributes that give us more options such as APPEARANCE, PERCEPTION and INFLUENCE. In addition, this system has a more robust non-space vehicle combat system, way better combat options, and has (IMO) better ‘feel/balance’ between Attributes and Skills. But the big difference is as above, in Silhouette, being a professional (skilled) in a field gives you more for your investment. The naturally talented may score a higher roll from time to time with their DMs but the Skilled Professional will be consistently better at more tasks.
Specifically:
>A Skilled individual will succeed at low-level tasks significantly more. Rolling more dice makes for better averages when you’re picking the highest. This is what being trained in a field is supposed to look like.
>Skill levels are low and similar to to Traveller (1,2,3 etc)
>System was designed from ground up to allow for advancement and improvement
>Dice Roll=(Skill level) x d6’s
>Roll Result=highest result from above pool
>Attribute= +/- to highest roll from dice pool
>Difficulties are essentially ½ Traveller (with some exceptions)
Example
Gina has Agility (DEX) of +1 and is skilled Pilot-2. She is She rolls 2d6 and gets (2,4). Her result is the highest (4). She adds her Agility (+1) for a total of 5. She succeeds at the same Average Task with 2 Margins of Success. Technically, she succeeded at a Challenging/Difficult task with no Margins of Succes/Effect.
TRAVELLER ATTRIBUTES=SILHOUETTE ATTRIBUTES
A Traveller Attribute ranges from 2 to 15. But the most important part is the DM/Attribute Modifier that it applies to rolls and it ranges from (x-x).
A Silhouette Attribute just doesn't have the first number. It is strictly a +/-number that ranges from -5 to -5 (with humans mainly staying within -3 to +3).
So that's why we can do normal Traveller Character Generation. We just go through all the steps and simply take the DM that results. Works perfectly.
