The Depths War

Duration: 358 Fourth Age to present (year 404) Parties involved: Kragen-Dûr and the denizens of the Underdark.   Over 40 years ago, some dwarven miners under the Kragen Mountains dug their way into a large cavern underground. From there, mining expeditions began to use that area as a launching point for further minding discovery. However, this came at a great cost. Goblins began to attack the dwarves under the mountains, ambushing them with great numbers. It struck the dwarves as odd that goblins would be so active in attacking dwarves, but nevertheless, they knew that conflict was upon them. This began what has been called the "Depths War" by many.   The Depths War has been a bloody and brutal conflict between dwarves and goblins under the mountains. As time has progressed and other conflicts have raged, more monsters have been seen coming out of the depths, with and without goblins. Every time, the goblins either seem to have captured/tamed the monsters, or they seem to be running from the monsters. This has only added to the confusion of the dwarven armies, but they have stood their ground.   This entire war has been largely a war of defense of the dwarven territories. Only a few times have the dwarves sent a select few task forces to explore further into the goblin's territory. Each time, significant losses were reported, with the few that returned seeming mad and without memories of their ventures. Thus, the dwarves have been forced to remain defensive and curious about what has forced all of these cowardly goblins into a bloody war that they cannot win.   It is also worth noting that no goblin is able to clearly articulate why they are coming out and fighting so ferociously. They all give various reasons, none the same, and many are conflicting, a few making no sense at all.
