The City of Wonder known as Dagrun (Corsian: Dejrun) is the capital city of Sylphereni Empire and has been a symbol of the Seventh Age. Its troubled past and grandiose present leave a history of events never before seen in Alephon. Dagrun's history spans 13 centuries though the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it a major human and half-elven settlement for almost six millennia, stretching back to the height of the Corsian Empire. It stands as the most populated city in Alephon, with hundreds and thousands of trvellers passing through on a regular basis.
Early History
The town of Dagger Run (later
Dagrun) was founded in the early first century of the Seventh Age, near the banks of the great river that would become known as the Cerulean Divide. Few records of the Corsians' prescence have been found in the area, though the remains of structures have been discovered and dated to even before the Corsians.
Myths of the Founding
The Church of Veraleon maintains the legend that the first of the Sylphereni was uplifted from the common rabble and guided to the eventual location of Dagrun by the sixth Primordial God Veraleon in order to fulfill a cryptic destiny, of which little is known even now. The very existence of Veraleon is disputed due to his absence among earlier texts, though the Curse of the Emerald Eyes that plagues the royal lineage does show signs of otherworldy intervention.
Early Empire
The royal records begin with Aurelius Sylpheren, who was born to a local duke whose name is now forgotten to history. In the first 20 years of what is now the 7th Age were the first stones laid for the foundations of building long crumbled. The first Council of the Summerlands was established after two generations of monarchs lost themselves in the royal's curse from high ranking individuals from the surrounidng towns, now loyal to the new rising authority. By the start of the second century, the first triangular layer of walls and towers had been completed, where they are still maintained to this day, though their effectiveness is much diminished by the newer, sturdier defenses.
The Plague Century
The 5th century brought about a true calamity for urban environments, with Dagrun being no exception. The recently established Solius Academy held a very tenuous grasp on their scholars, and this loose regulation brought about the Ochre Phlegms, a highly contagious air and waterborne disease infecting the lungs and bowels of the city's inhabitants. The plague of ochre phlegm, also known as the ochre plague, was a highly virulent and deadly disease that struck the city of Dagrun during a time of great unrest and turmoil. It was characterized by the production of thick, ochre-colored phlegm and a range of severe respiratory symptoms, including coughing, difficulty breathing, and fever.
As the ochre plague spread, it caused widespread panic and fear among the population, leading to disruptions in trade and daily life. The city's council of mages at the Academy struggled to find a way to stop the plague and save the lives of their citizens. Some turned to exotic remedies and potions, while others sought out dark magic in a desperate bid to find a cure. Despite these efforts, the plague continued to ravage the city and surrounding areas, causing great loss of life and suffering. The ochre plague left a lasting impact on the city of Dagrun, serving as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of crisis, as well as a limitation on the self governance of the Academy.
