Double Eagle

Lakorthian Double Eagle

The Double Eagle is a Lakorth Gold coin used for currency on the major continent of Ethae. Created in 5000sc at the height of the Republic of Lakorth, the Double Eagle was twice as thick as the Eagle (Lakorth's standard Gold Piece), thus doubling its worth. Its original intention was for paying the Lakortha army common soldier's monthly wage. The size of the army, and its widespread influence meant these coins quickly spread through Novyum and beyond. Between its first minting and the decline of the Republic five hundred years later, the Double Eagle became more widely spread than the standard Eagle coinage.

After the fall of the Republic the Double declined in use, though never falling out of use. Depending on the sacristy of gold in Lakorth mints, a few dozen to a few hundred were minted each year for the thousand years since the end of the Republic. This has technically kept the Double Eagle in circulation, especially in the Heartlands. However, in other regions the Double Eagle is collected in vaults, hordes, and treasures as a hedge of protection for kings and nobles. A way of holding fewer coins needed to be counted for twice the value. The long history of the Double Eagle has also seen some of the oldest surviving coins valued far above their weight in gold for collectors and historians.
