Baatu, God of Death
Baatu is the god of finality, of ending, of completion, of death. Baatu's job is as the chief Solicitor of Souls - he governs all the souls of sentient beings and determines their fate. He takes those who had been granted freewill by their own deity, judges them in accordance to their god, and directs the souls to the plane of their eternal existence.
It is believed that once a sentient creature dies it's soul is harvested by the minions of Orcus and brought to judgment before Orcus. Orcus sits in judgement of the individual's life - did they live up to the demands of their faith? Were they true to their god? If the answer is yes, the being is whisked away to the plane of their deity to fulfill that deities desires for the rest of eternity. If the answer is no, the soul is given over to the various avatars of Baatu is eternal subjugation to their cause.
Baatu's avatars are known as the Devil Princes (Orcus Prince of Death, Nhaggol the Reaper, Zuggtmoy Daughter of Rot, Lloth Mistress of Night, and the Bloodqueen) and his hordes (Baatezu) are commonly referred to as devils.
Baatu's plane of existance is called Purgatory.
