Rodent King

Description

Rodent Kings are highly psychic Rodents able to control and manipulate their non anomalous counterparts. Often this presents itself as a swarm of rats or mice as they crowd their king for security. Rodent Kings have proven to be extremely intelligent and psychically powerful. Some instances have even been able to manipulate and affect human minds.  

Morphology

Rodent kings display no anomalous attributes in their appearance other than a slight increase in size. This size increase is barely noticeable but present in comparison with non anomalous counterparts. This is primarily due to the Rodent Kings every need and wish being provided by their hive of servants. Though Rodent Kings almost always appear as an anomalous instance of Rat, almost any Rodent species is capable of generating a Rodent King. Rodent Kings have a slightly larger brain when compared to their non anomalous cousins, however this seems to be the extent of the Rodent Kings observable anomalous biology. Many Rodent kings are often seen swarmed by their Rodent Armies, their minions doing all they can to protect their king. Often this causes Rodent Kings to become physically bound to a number of their minions. Through oils, grease, and bodily expulsions becoming matted into their fur Rodent Kings will inevitably become attached to a number of their minions. This is commonly mistaken as rodents having knotted tails leading to a number of information breaches by exterminators discovering deceased instances.  

Growth and Creation

It is not known how Rodent Kings are made or generated leading many to presume that they are a naturally occurring phenomena. Others have suggested that Rodent Kings could be expat entities from an as of yet undiscovered realm. It is known that Rodent Kings are pervasive in some realms though none have proven to be a definitive origin point. Rodent Kings are most extremely common in the plane of Nerragal though have proven to be invasive in almost all plains of reality.  

Abilities

At first glance Rodent Kings appear to be unthreatening, only being around the size of a rat. True some may find a Rodent King's appearance to be ghastly, though where a Rodent King becomes truly threatening is their potent psychic powers. Though not able to perform acts of telekinesis, Rodent Kings are incredibly gifted in the art of Telepathy.  

Rodent King Telepathy

Telepathy is the primary anomalous tool used by Rodent Kings for hunting and defence. The vast majority of instances have shown the ability to influence and even directly control up to 600 non anomalous Rodents using this Telepathy. This Telepathic control varies from instance to instance however, with strong Rodent Kings easily controlling and manipulating thousands of non anomalous rodents.Rodents under their Kings control will enact every order with vigour. Controlled rodents have even been known to undertake life threatening and suicidal actions all at the behest of their king. Certain powerful Rodent King instances have even shown an aptitude for effecting and even controlling mortal humans. This is in no way par for the course however, such ability has only been found in a select number of cases. Various Rodent Kings have however been documented attempting to communicate with and influence mortal humans. These communication attempts have often been described as incoherent, bizarre, and outright maddening. Fortunately most mortal humans prove to be resilient in the face of light Psychic manipulation.  

Behaviour and Psychology

For the most part Rodent Kings do not display any abnormal behaviours or psychological traits. Most commonly Rodent Kings are described as lazy, often due to their preference for remaining in one place whilst its minions undertake hunting, foraging, cleaning, nest building, and other such activities. Rodent Kings are also often seen as cowardly, primarily due to their pension for fleeing danger whilst swarming said danger with their Rodent minions.   Many have attempted to understand the inner thoughts and feelings of Rodent Kings using various acts of Telepathy. Given the inherent difference in species however even specialised Telepaths have been left confused. Even when using non anomalous research techniques the Rodent King has proved near impossible to communicate with, understand, and discern intent.    

Habitat & Diet

Rodent Kings are found in the same areas, regions, and locals as their non anomalous minions. Deep in sewers and lurking in dilapidated buildings the Rodent Kings sit and grow fat as their minions bring them sustenance. Though commonly Rodent Kings will subsist on the same diet as their non anomalous counterparts they will often get the pick of the gathering. Some Rodent Kings have shown preference for normally difficult to obtain food, junk food items such as pizza, chips, and confectionaries are often prized among Rodent Kings. The Rodent King will often send its minions out into the world to scavenge and forage for food. The most powerful and well organised of these Rodent Kings will be surrounded in copious amounts of food. In the majority of cases Rodent Kings will ensure that their minions remain unseen in order to prevent human retaliation.   Some however have shown far more aggressive hunting tactics, sending their Rodent Armies to raid and plunder pantries, kitchens, and storehouses. Such aggressive instances have been known to decimate small settlements in the past, consuming all in their path in a matter of hours.    

Combat & Containment

Rodent Kings are considered to be high threat entities, their psychic abilities and Rodent Armies can prove difficult for the unprepared. Fortunately Rodent Kings possess no Anomalous durability or direct offensive abilities. Even unwitting field Agents are more than capable of stomping out Rodent Kings and along with their armies using conventional means. The majority of Rodent Kings are undiscovered by Anomalous Security Agencies, their kingdoms being annihilated by a hapless exterminator called to deal with a rodent problem. This does however leave only the most powerful of Rodent King instances for Anomalous Security Agencies to encounter.   First and foremost Rodent Kings are often difficult to identify and locate, their kingdoms are often far from the reach of mortal humans. By making use of conventional means however such kingdoms can be easily located. In past ASAs have made use of civilian exterminators to locate Rodent Kings hiding places. It is recommended that if discovered Field Agents simply engage with conventional means. Deadly poisons are often the most common means of removing Rodent Kings. By baiting easily accessible food sources Field Agents can efficiently deal with infestations. If necessary it is recommended that Field Agents employ more aggressive chemical means, pouring poisons directly into the Rodent Kingdoms.   The Rodent King will most likely attempt to defend itself, sending torrents of its minions toward their assailant. Though this can be simply countered by making use of primitive means many are left terrified of such a gnashing swarm. Furthermore it is possible that Rodent Kings are powerful enough to influence and affect the minds of Field Agents. It is for this reason that if discovered instances should be immediately reported to Anomalous Overwatch. Response Agents should be deployed with appropriate extermination equipment and cover stories. It is also highly recommended that Response Agents undergo counter Psycenetics training in order to prevent friendly fire instances. Some powerful Rodent Kings have in the past seized control over multiple civilians in order to defend themselves. When engaging such possessed individuals non-lethal means are preferred. Though with the aggressive and nigh suicidal nature seen in possessed individuals lethal force is understandable. Such telepathic possession can be countered by the deployment of Psychic Nullifiers and powerful telepaths. The deployment of a Psychic Nullifier is often more than enough to cripple a Rodent King and his army. In most cases the Rodent King will lose all control of his minions leaving him almost entirely exposed. Similar effects can be seen by the deployment of powerful Telepaths employing Psychic Scrambling. By overloading the local Psychic Space with messages and signals ASAs can in effect send a Rodent Kings Army into disarray.  

Subspecies and Variants

A number of Rodent King subspecies and variants have been encountered by Anomalous Security Agencies. Many such variants are simply species specific instances of Rodent King.  

Rat King

- The most common species of Rodent King encountered across the globe. Resembles non anomalous rat species.  

Prairie King

- Resembles a Field Mouse, tiny though far more psychically powerful than their cousins.  

Shrew King

- Found near bodies of water the Shrew King is considered to be one of the rarer subspecies of Rodent King.  

Squirrel King

- Bushy Tailed and ruling the trees Squirrel Kings are rarely encountered, their kingdoms deep within forgotten woodlands.  

Burrow King

- Beneath the earth the Burrow King rules over their army of mole rats. Often known for their raids on farms and damage to civilian infrastructure.  

Nerragalin Rat Lord

- Fat, Plague Covered, and dangerous, the Nerragalin Rat Lords are pervasive across their home realm.    

Myths, Legends and Incidents

Rodent Kings appear in a variety of myths and legends, most commonly they are depicted as balls of Rats, tails tied and stuck together. In popular culture Rodent Kings are often seen as rare commonly occurring phenomena. Though their abilities have been kept entirely hidden a number of instances have appeared on the internet in the form of pictures. Fortunately the abilities of the Rodent King are almost never discovered, leaving their security intact.  

The Black Plague

The Black Plague is a prime example of why Rodent Kings should be exterminated when discovered. Many cities across the globe became infested with illness and vermin, their minions spreading disease wherever they went. Though the spreading of such a plague was unintentional the pervasive and intelligent nature of Rodent King's causes countless normally preventable outbreaks. The mass spreading of rodents allowed Rodent Kings to grow their armies to otherwise impossible sizes. With such large armies of minions, skirmishes between rival Rodent Kings over food sources became commonplace. Similarly mass migrations of hundreds and sometimes thousands of Rodents were seen across the European countryside.It is furthermore known that Nerragalin Rat Lords became almost commonplace in our realm during the plague, with instances spreading the plague with pleasure.
