Elves

Elves, also called the Fair Folk, are a sapient species native to the enchanted island of Annwyth on Alatoria. In ancient times they more closely resembled creatures than people, though after a few millennia of inter-breeding with Humans, the modern Elf now reflect traits of both species, with some regional and cultural variations. They are considered the cousins of the Darkbloods, who are also native to Annwyth in the Fairmounts.   Elves can be categorized into two distinct classes; High and Low. High Elves are more populous as a people and are often just called 'Elves' due to their prevalence. Low Elves make up a variety of 'lesser' species such as the Mer, the Lupyn, nature spirits and other less-humanoid-appearing peoples from Annwyth. They are still considered nominally Elven, though their appearance varies wildly and most do not carry any Human genetic material whatsoever. Many are not fully sentient and are better classified as animals, and they often face prejudice from High Elves.   In modern times, the two most widely-known ethnicities of High Elf are the Annwythi Elves and Tenebronian Elves. The former are native to Annwyth, whilst the other is native to the Kingdom of Tenebron, and they have distinct physical and cultural differences between the two. Cyrhani Elves are the most Human-looking of all Elvenkind.   Elves are deeply entwined with the magic of the natural world, as they are the descendants of the Fae, the ancient proto-Elves who were more immortal than mortal. Thus they carry strange traits inherited from their primordial ancestors. Elven lifespans are long due to their interbreeding with Humans and their own origins -- An average healthy Elf can live up to five-hundred years, sometimes longer if magic is involved.   All Elves are inherently magical, regardless of High or Low status or ethnicity beneath those. For example, all Elves, High and Low, are capable of Soulgazing, allowing them to share memories, dreams and thoughts with other creatures through physical touch at will.   Additionally, some Elves, though not all, may be subjected to the terms of the Kindred Bond, an Elven covenant unique to them that sees them paired with a pre-determined match in order to produce strong and capable offspring.   The Kindred Bond is believed to have been started by an ancient spell, written millennia ago, to avoid interbreeding among the relatively small population of Elves on Annwyth, and thus is extremely common among Annwythi Elves in particular. Low Elves do not appear to be affected by the conditions of the Kindred Bond, whilst other High Elven races like the Tenebronian Elves appear to be affected intermittently. The Kindred Bond is a way of life on Annwyth, though, and is treated like sacred law among the Mastery.   Elven magic, especially for Annwythi Elves, primarily revolves around 'covenants', a classification of magic that deals with bargains, deals, oaths, and shared power between two or more individuals. Elven covenants can be so strong they go on to affect every living creature they were written to touch, like the Kindred Bond, the most powerful covenant in known existence. Due to the nature of Elven magic, they are often regarded as tricksters as they usually derive power from one-sided agreements on their part.   Elves from outside of Annwyth, like those in Teneborn or elsewhere, tend to have more atypical magical aptitudes and might not use Elven covenants at all.

Basic Information

Anatomy

High Elves are remarkably Human-like, sharing almost identical anatomy and physical characteristics with them, with a few key differences. They possess a binary vascular system, with two hearts working in tandem to support their anatomy which are situated lower in the chest cavity than a human heart. If one heart is damaged, the other may support the Elf, though they will feel slow and unwell until their damaged heart is treated. Elves are also generally more durable than the average human, possessing what might be considered supernatural strength and speed. They can grow to be as tall as six feet, and are found as short as five.   Elves, with their larger ears, have a naturally heightened sense of hearing, able to hear twice as far as a Human. Their sight is also enhanced, and Elves are capable of seeing with relative clarity in low-light settings that Humans would find too obscuring.   Low Elves, however, can vary wildly in anatomy and do not necessarily need to resemble High Elves or even humans. The Mer, for example, possess a fish-like tail instead of legs from the waist down.   Elves come in a vast array of colours, though skew more towards natural tones than those of their cousins, the Darkbloods. The most dramatic skintones found among them are gold, violet, and pale green. Otherwise, Elves come in the same shades as Humans. Low Elves do not adhere to this rule and may have wildly varied skintones.

Genetics and Reproduction

Like all sentient life, Elven reproduction adheres to the common theory of Interspecies Relations. They are capable of reproducing with the other sentient species of Alatoria, but cannot produce true half-bred children.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves, like other sapients, have a life cycle that mimics Humans. They are born live to a mother, and experience an average growth rate until they reach physical maturity, at 22 years. At that point onward, their aging appears to slow dramatically, almost to a crawl. There is very little physical difference, for example, between an elf who is 40 years old and an elf who is 400 years old. An elf will only begin to show signs of advanced age mimicking the senior years of a Human after their 450s.   An Elven child matures at more or less the same rate as a Human child after birth. An Elf is considered a child until they reach physical maturity, however, and are usually treated as such by their family and society, and it is generally looked down upon for an Elf past the age of majority but still before physical maturity to be married or courted.   Around an Elf's 16th year is when any sort of latent magic they possess will manifest. This may be the ability to make Elven covenants or Soulgazing, or other magic specific to certain regions like Tenebronian shadow magic.   After their 22nd year, an Elf undergoes the Summer Rite and, after completion, is considered a young adult and is wholly independent from their parents or caregivers. An adult Elf is expected to be able to take care of themselves and provide for their elders at this point in life, and co-dependency is frowned upon after this milestone is reached unless it is for a specific reason. Many Elves leave the isle of Annwyth at this point to explore the world beyond if they were raised in seclusion. This is also the time where a Kindred Bond may be formed, and some Elves make a point of leaving Annwyth specifically to seek out their Kindred Bond if they did not find their match among the limited population of the island.
