Soulforged

A living harmony of magic and steel.

What is a Soulforged?

One of the greatest advancements in the Aetherwork Revolution are the Soulforged (sometimes known as Steelsouled or Warforged), constructs of special alloys of steel and wood from certain trees powered by a refined crystal born of the Infinite Weave. Some artificers treat them like friends, working in tandem with them and constantly improving them, treating them like people. Others treat them like indentured servants, caring not for the vulnerable life they have just brought into the world. A rarer few just let their progeny out into the wider world, letting them explore and live the life they have just been given to the fullest.   Soulforged are typically given names by their creators, though those that are free choose to adopt names of those they revere. Soulforged also need not reproduce, and so have no real concept of gender, and as such most of them refer to themselves with the singular "they." Other times, their creators label them with "he" or "she," like how one would label a boat or a car.

Soulforged Features

Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1.   Age. A typical soulforged is between two and thirty years old. The maximum lifespan of the soulforged remains a mystery; so far, soulforged have shown no signs of deterioration due to age.   Alignment. Most soulforged take comfort in order and discipline, tending toward law and neutrality. But some have absorbed the morality – or lack thereof – of the beings with which they served.   Creature Type. You are a Construct, but also count as a Humanoid for any effect that would require it. (for example, cure wounds has the ability to heal you.)   Size. Your size is Medium. Most soulforged stand between 5 and 6 1/2 feet tall. Weight and build are affected by subrace.   Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.   Soulforged Resilience. You were created to have remarkable fortitude, represented by the following benefits.
  • You have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned, and you have resistance to poison damage.
  • You are immune to disease.
  • You don’t need to eat, drink, or breathe.
  • You don't need to sleep and don't suffer the effects of exhaustion due to lack of rest, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Sentry's Rest. When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.   Integrated Protection. Your body has built-in defensive layers, which determine your armor class. You gain no benefit from wearing armor, but if you are using a shield, you apply its bonus as normal.
You can alter your body to enter different defensive modes; each time you finish a long rest, choose one mode to adopt from the following table, provided you meet the mode’s prerequisite.
Mode Prerequisite Effect
Darkwood Core (unarmored) None AC = 11 + your Dexterity modifier (add proficiency bonus if proficient with light armor).
Composite Plating (armored) Medium armor proficiency AC = 13 + your Dexterity modifier (maximum of 2) + your proficiency bonus.
Heavy Plating (armored) Heavy armor proficiency AC = 16 + your proficiency bonus; disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one language of your choice, typically a second language spoken by your creator.   Specialization. Three specializations of Soulforged are built in the world of Akronis. Choose one of these specializations:

Envoy

As an envoy, you were designed with a certain specialized function in mind. You might be an assassin, a healer, or an entertainer, to name a few possibilities. Envoys are the rarest of the soulforged subraces, and yours could be a unique design.   Ability Score Increase. Two different ability scores of your choice increase by 1.   Specialized Design. You gain one skill proficiency of your choice, one tool proficiency of your choice, and fluency in one language of your choice.   Integrated Tool. Choose one tool you’re proficient with. This tool is integrated into your body, and you double your proficiency bonus for any ability checks you make with it. You must have your hands free to use this integrated tool.

Juggernaut

You’re an imposing defense machine built for close combat and raw might. You tower over your comrades; juggernaut soulforged stand between 6 and 7 feet in height and can weigh up to 450 pounds.   Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2.   Iron Fists. When you make an unarmed strike, you can deal 1d4 + your Strength modifier bludgeoning damage instead of the normal damage.   Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.

Skirmisher

You were built with scouting and maneuverability in mind. You are lean, gaunt and lanky, though still potentially very dense and durable.   Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2.   Swift. Your walking speed is increased by 5 feet.   Light Step. When you are traveling alone for an extended period of time (one hour or more), you can move stealthily at a normal pace.

Death of a Soulforged

Not everyone can live forever, not even the apex of artifice. Though they may not age how we can conceive it, they can still die. When the Weavecrystal heart of a Soulforged is destroyed, the consciousness within is released back to the Infinite Weave, and the body simply ceases its function. It lays where it fell, left to slowly become part of the earth once again. Soulforged can only be returned to life by either intense magical tinkering from the artificer that forged it, or via a true resurrection spell. Anything weaker cannot truly bring it back, as you need to harness an infinitesimally small part of the massive tapestry that is the Infinite Weave.

Birth of a Remnant

When the body of a Soulforged fails, the Weavecrystal heart may sometimes live on. If the body fails and the heart persists, the soul can take on a new form, not returning to the Infinite Weave, but rather manifesting beyond the steel shell and becoming what some have called a "Remnant" or a "Weaveborn." A Remnant is the physical embodiment of the Infinite Weave on the world of Akronis. Unfortunately, due to their unstable nature, a Remnant cannot survive for long, the longest surviving for maybe 3 years at most.   Remnant Lore Article
